Beyoncé’s RENAISSANCE and Taylor Swift‘s Eras tour were two of the most successful concert events of 2023. Greta Gerwig’s Barbie was also a huge smash, making 2023 “the year of the girl.”
This trend continued at the 66th annual Grammy Awards, where emerging female musicians who had built a name for themselves on the pop charts over the course of the previous year dominated the main categories.
The rock group boygenius, Miley Cyrus, Lana Del Rey, Janelle Monáe, Olivia Rodrigo, Taylor Swift, and SZA are the seven musicians who have been nominated for the album of the year category. The other seven artists are for albums that were created by female artists who are under the age of forty respectively.
Jon Batiste, who has won five Grammys and is nominated for six prizes today, is the exception to this rule. He was awarded the album of the year trophy in 2022 for his work titled “We Are.”
In contrast to the candidates that were nominated the previous year, which featured Latin pop diva Bad Bunny, rock band Coldplay, and a victory by Harry Styles’ Harry’s House over Beyoncé’s RENAISSANCE, that category’s inclusion of female musicians from across the pop and R&B spectrum stands in stark contrast to the contenders that were nominated.
The main event of the evening, which was hosted by the comedian Trevor Noah, began with a medley of two new songs performed by Dua Lipa. These songs were her recent single “Houdini” and the unreleased “Training Season,” both of which are from her upcoming studio album.
In between these two songs, a selection from her song “Dance the Night,” which was featured on the soundtrack for the film Barbie, was performed.
Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman’s duet on Chapman’s song “Fast Car,” which Combs has brought back into the public eye, was one of the most anxiously anticipated joint performances of this year. The Grammys are famed (or infamous) for their odd live collaborations, but one of the most anticipated joint performances of this year was Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman’s duet.
The song was sung by Chapman at the Grammy Awards 35 years ago, when it was nominated for record and song of the year, and she won best new artist along with two other honors. However, Chapman was not announced as a performer at the Grammy Awards.
For her album titled “Mañana Será Bonito,” the Colombian singer and composer Karol G was declared the winner of the prize for the best musica urbana album this year. “This is my first time at the Grammys, and this is my first time holding my own,” Karol G remarked during her acceptance speech. “It’s a milestone for me.”
The solo autobiographical album Michael, which was Killer Mike’s first album in almost a decade, won three of the four rap categories, including best rap performance, best rap song, and best rap album. Michael was also the first album that Killer Mike had released in over a decade.
In a report that was published in Variety, it was stated that the rapper was placed in handcuffs and led out of the stadium by law enforcement officers soon before the broadcast event. The Los Angeles Police Department did not disclose any additional information about the arrest when NPR attempted to contact them.
