Alex Pereira – Alex Pereira is a Brazilian professional mixed martial artist who has also competed in kickboxing in the past. He was born on July 7, 1987. He is presently competing in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) at the Light Heavyweight category, where he is the current UFC Light Heavyweight Champion. Previously, he competed in the UFC Middleweight division and won the title there.

He is the first and only fighter to have ever held Glory championships in two weight classes concurrently, having done it in kickboxing when he was both the middleweight and light heavyweight champion for the Glory organization.

In addition, Pereira competed in tournaments for organizations like It’s Showtime and the SUPERKOMBAT Fighting Championship. He is the reigning champion of the UFC Light Heavyweight division, and as of the 24th of October, 2023, he is ranked #10 in the pound-for-pound standings for men in the UFC.

Alex Pereira Kickboxing Career

  • He defeated Dustin Jacoby via first-round knockout in the semi-finals of the Glory 14: Zagreb – Middleweight Contender Tournament, which took place on March 8, 2014 in Zagreb, Croatia. Sahak Parparyan was defeated by him via majority decision in the final. He won the tournament.

 

  • During the broadcast of Glory 15: Istanbul, it was revealed that Pereira would be one of eight fighters fighting in the middleweight tournament that will be held at Glory 17: Los Angeles – Last Man Standing on June 21, 2014 in Inglewood, California, in the United States of America.

 

  • In the quarterfinals of the competition, he was eliminated after suffering a defeat at the hands of eventual winner Artem Levin by unanimous decision.

 

  • Pereira announced in November 2018 that he planned to pursue a career in mixed martial arts once his contract with Glory expired in April 2019. In the end, Pereira re-signed with Glory with the understanding that he would be allowed to compete in mixed martial arts as well.

 

  • Pereira moved up to battle Donegi Abena for the interim Glory Light Heavyweight Championship at Glory 68. This fight came after four consecutive successful defenses of his Glory middleweight belt (against Yousri Belgaroui, Simon Marcus, and Jason Wilnis).

 

  • Pereira was the first fighter in Glory history to become a double champion as he knocked out his opponent in the third round of their battle.

Mixed martial arts career

  • After beginning his career in kickboxing, Pereira made the transition to mixed martial arts in 2015 at Jungle bout 82, where he competed against Quemuel Ottoni [pt], but ultimately lost the bout via submission.

 

  • After that, he continued competing at Jungle Fight and went on to win two consecutive bouts, one against Marcelo Cruz and the other against Marcus Vinicius Silveira via knockout and technical knockout, respectively.

 

  • Pereira made the announcement that he had signed a contract to compete against Diego Henrique da Silva on the tenth of August, 2018, in the Brazilian edition of Dana White’s Contender Series. However, there was never a fight between these two since Glory decided that Pereira could not compete.

 

  • On October 22, 2020, it was reported that Pereira had signed a deal with Legacy Fighting Alliance, and on November 20, 2020, he competed in his first fight for the promotion, which took place against Thomas Powell. He knocked out his opponent in the first round to get the victory.

 

  • Pereira signed a contract to compete for the UFC on September 3, 2021. At UFC 268, which took place on November 6, 2021, he made his debut in the promotion against Andreas Michailidis.

 

  • In the second round, he scored a knockout victory that was ruled a technical knockout. He was given the award for Performance of the Night as a result of this victory.

 

  • At UFC 277 on July 30, 2022, it was planned that Pereira will compete against Sean Strickland. Despite this, the organization has opted to reschedule the fight for UFC 276, which will take place on July 2, 2022. After knocking out Strickland in the first round, Pereira was declared the winner of the fight.

 

  • Pereira made the announcement that he was moving up to the Light Heavyweight class via Twitter on the 13th of April 2023.
