Alexander Zverev Career

Zverev competed in qualification for three different tournaments while he was only 14 years old, one of which was the 2011 Moselle Open on the ATP Tour. However, he was unsuccessful in all of his matches. In August of 2012, he competed in a Futures tournament in Germany and won his first professional main draw match against fellow countryman Christian Lichtenegger. At the conclusion of the year, he competed in his first professional final, where he lost to Florian Reynet in the second place match in an ITF $10,000 tournament held in Florida.

Zverev continued to concentrate on the juniors in 2013, and he did not reach another pro-level final that year. However, he did make his main draw debut on the ATP Tour in July, when he competed in his hometown tournament, the International German Open, but he was defeated by Roberto Bautista Agut. Additionally, he competed on the ATP Challenger Tour for the first time in August, where he was defeated by Maximo Gonzales in the Meerbusch Challenger.

After Zverev’s victory in the boys’ singles competition at the 2014 Australian Open, he turned his attention only to his professional career and competed in only professional tournaments for the remainder of the year. At the beginning of the season, he participated in five different events on the pro tour, but at none of them was he able to advance to the main draw. He did not score a victory in a main draw match until the eleventh competition of the year, which was the Heilbronner Neckarcup Challenger.

In that competition, he won a solitary match. One of his defeats came at the hands of his brother Mischa, who retired against him. Zverev had his first professional breakthrough in July when he won the Braunschweig Challenger for his first professional championship. Prior to competing in the tournament, Zverev had only one career victory at the Challenger level and no wins in the top 100. Three of the players he defeated were ranked in the top 100, including his opponent in the first round, Tobias Kamke, who was ranked 87th, his opponent in the semifinals, Andrey Golubev, who was ranked 56th, and his opponent in the final, Paul-Henri Mathieu, who was ranked 89th.
