Austin Scott Political Career

  • In Georgia’s 8th congressional district, where the Democratic incumbent Jim Marshall was running unopposed, Scott challenged him with the help of millions of dollars in campaign donations from national PACs. In the general election held on November 2, he garnered 53% of the vote, which was sufficient to secure victory over Marshall’s 47%.
  • In the beginning, Scott intended to run for governor of Georgia, and he made the announcement of his candidacy in January of 2009.
  • He made headlines for his “Walk of Georgia,” in which he walked more than 1,000 miles around the state, for introducing a bill to abolish tolls on Georgia 400, and for leading the charge in pressuring Georgia State Attorney General Thurbert Baker to file suit against the federal government over the Affordable Care Act. He also introduced a bill to abolish tolls on Georgia 400.
  • During his first time in office, Scott was the representative for a district that stretched roughly from Macon to Moultrie and was located in the geographic center of the state.
  • On June 9, Scott received 89.81% of the vote, which was enough to win the Republican primary over his opponents Vance Dean and Danny Ellyson. He faced a Democratic opponent, Lindsay Holliday, for just the second time since he first ran for the seat. Holliday is the only person to have done so.
  • In the general election held on November 3, Scott was victorious over Holliday, receiving 64.52 percent of the vote.
  • Moody Air Force Base and Robins Air Force Base are both located inside Scott’s district and are both operated by the United States Air Force. Scott is a senior member of the House Armed Services Committee, and he is a supporter of policies that are favorable to the military and that increase expenditure on defense.
  • In addition to this, he is an advocate for the United States Navy’s hospital ships. In his capacity as a member of the House Armed Services Committee, Scott is actively involved in the fight against transnational criminal organizations and the movement of illicit substances across international borders.
  • On the 7th of January 2021, Scott did not raise any objections to the certification of the Electoral College in the House of Representatives.
  • On January 5, 2021, he joined several other Republican colleagues in writing a letter to the leadership of Congress stating that members of Congress did not have the authority to object to Electoral College votes that were sent to them by each state in the absence of an investigation from a state legislature or a conflicting slate of electors.
  • The letter was part of a larger effort to convey that members of Congress did not have the authority to object to Electoral College votes sent to them by each state.
