Bryce Harper Career

Harper was the first player selected in the Major League Baseball draft in 2010, and the Washington Nationals used that pick to choose him. The Nationals picked Harper as an outfielder despite the fact that he had previously and mostly played catcher. This was done in order to extend Harper’s career and to expedite his player development so that he might make his debut in the Major League Baseball earlier.

Harper and the Nationals came to an agreement on a five-year deal worth $9.9 million just before the deadline for signing players. This figure accounts for a signing bonus of $6.25 million as well as eight semesters’ worth of college tuition. Stan Kasten, president of the Nationals, was asked about the agreement, and he responded by saying, “The truth is, with a full minute to go, Mike and I both thought we were not going to have a deal.”

When the general manager of the Nationals, Mike Rizzo, was asked what happened in that final minute, he responded by saying, “It was both sides compromising and knowing that we were so close, it would be fruitless not to get a deal done.” On August 26, 2010, the Washington Nationals made the announcement that they had signed Harper to a contract.

He explained that he chose to play with the number 34 because “I always loved Mickey Mantle, and three and four equals seven.”

Harper was selected to participate in the Arizona Fall League (AFL) as a member of the Scottsdale Scorpions taxi-squad after he batted. Harper is the second-youngest player in the history of the league; he is two days older than when Mets’ prospect Fernando Martnez appeared in the league in 2006. He hit 343 times in the at bat and had 729 total bases. Harper and the Scottsdale Scorpions took home the 2010 American Football League Championship on November 20.

After hitting 399 in spring training, Bryce Harper was optioned by the Nationals to play for the Hagerstown Suns of the Class-A South Atlantic League. This marked the beginning of Harper’s tenure in the minor leagues. After getting off to a sluggish start in the minor leagues in April 2011, Bryce Harper went to see ophthalmologist Dr. Keith Smithson. Smithson is claimed to have informed Harper, “I don’t know how you ever hit before. You have some of the most unattractive eyes that I have ever seen. Harper had a batting average of.480 in his first 20 games with contact lenses, during which he also hit seven home runs, ten doubles, and drove in 23 runs.
