Candace Parker College Career

  • At the beginning of the academic year 2004, Parker enrolled at the University of Tennessee. Since Parker had sustained a knee injury during a summer league game, Tennessee made the announcement on February 17, 2005 that she would be required to redshirt her first season of college football.
  • During the 2005–2006 season, Parker was Parker’s starting quarterback for the Tennessee Lady Vols. Forward, center, and guard were the positions that she was listed as on the roster.
  • She became the first woman to dunk in an NCAA tournament game on March 19, 2006, when she was playing Army in the first round of the tournament. She also became the first woman to dunk twice in an NCAA tournament game. Both of these accomplishments occurred on March 19, 2006.
  • In her sophomore season, Parker became the fastest player in the history of the Lady Vols to score 1,000 career points. This accomplishment occurred during a game that took place on the road against Alabama on January 28, 2007.
  • On February 21, 2008, Parker made the announcement that she would be choosing to forego her final season of eligibility at Tennessee in order to concentrate on competing in the Olympics in 2008 and pursuing a career as a professional basketball player.

WNBA Career

  • The Los Angeles Sparks made the decision to select Parker with the first pick in the 2008 Women’s National Basketball Association draft on April 9, 2008, just one day after she won the NCAA championship.
  • On the Olympic team, she competed alongside Lisa Leslie and DeLisha Milton-Jones, who were also teammates. After being selected in the second round of the draft, Shannon Bobbitt, who was Parker’s teammate at Tennessee, joined the Spark basketball team.
  • In her first game, which took place on May 17, 2008, she started against the Phoenix Mercury and finished with 34 points, 12 rebounds, and 8 assists.
  • The record for the most points scored by a rookie in their first game was previously held by Cynthia Cooper, who scored 25 points in her first game in 1997. Her 34 points shattered that mark. In spite of the passage of time, it continues to be a record.
  • The Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) put a two-week suspension on play in August of 2008 so that its players may participate in the Summer Olympics with their respective national teams.
  • During the 2010 season, Parker was only able to participate in ten games before suffering a shoulder injury that forced her to miss the remainder of the season. She also did not make it to the playoffs.
  • Parker participated in her first six games in the year 2011. During the seventh game, Parker went down after snatching a defensive rebound and made brief contact with Quanitra Hollingsworth. The incident occurred with 5 minutes and 56 seconds remaining in the third section of the game.
  • The first time Parker participated in an All-Star game was on July 27, 2013, when she was in her sixth season. She was voted the Most Valuable Player of the WNBA All-Star Game after scoring 23 points and grabbing 11 rebounds in a comeback victory for the West during the game.
  • The Sparks ended the season with the same record as they had the previous year, which was 24–10, and they were once again awarded the second seed in the Wyoming Conference.
  • Parker re-signed with the Sparks in 2016 as an unrestricted free agent as part of the same contract. Parker became the team’s second option throughout the season, after Nneka Ogwumike, who led the team in scoring and won the Most Valuable Player title. Parker earned an average of 15.3 points per game during the season.
  • Pat Summitt, Parker’s college coach and mentor, passed away from Alzheimer’s disease at the age of 64 in late June. Parkinson’s disease was the cause of death.
  • Parker had a hamstring injury during the Sparks’ first preseason game in May 2019, and he was ruled out for three to five weeks as a result of the injury. In her first game of the season, which took place on June 18, 2019, Parker scored three points while shooting one of nine from the field.
  • The game was a loss against the Washington Mystics by a score of 81–52. As part of the team’s victory versus the Seattle Storm on August 4, 2019, Parker scored a season-high 21 points, which led to the team’s victory.
  • A contract was signed by Parker with the Las Vegas Aces in February of 2023. In July, she had surgery to repair a fracture in her foot, and she is currently out of action indefinitely.
  • She won her third championship when the Las Vegas Aces defeated the New York Liberty in the 2023 WNBA Finals by a score of 3-1. This victory allowed her to become the champion of the league.
