Carl Nassib Biography

Carl Nassib – Carl Paul Nassib is a former American football outside linebacker who played in the National Football League (NFL) for seven seasons. He was born on April 12, 1993. As a senior in 2015, he was recognized as an All-American by every major college football publication after playing college football for the Penn State Nittany Lions.

Nassib was taken by the Cleveland Browns in the third round of the NFL Draft in 2016, and he also has experience playing for the Las Vegas Raiders. Nassib made history in 2021 when he became the first openly gay active NFL player to play in a game after also coming out publicly as gay.

The city of West Chester in Pennsylvania is where Nassib was born. He received three different letters in football during his time at Malvern Preparatory School in Malvern, where he also played the sport. He was a player on both the offensive and defensive ends of the line. During his junior and senior years, he was a key contributor to the team’s record of 7–4 overall. In addition, Nassib earned a letter of recognition three times in the sport of track and field and twice in the sport of basketball. He was given the honor of serving as team captain in basketball during his senior year, and he was instrumental in the Friars’ run to a record of 24–7.

Carl Nassib Career

Nassib earned a consideration for Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Week for his performance in his debut game as a professional, which was played against the Philadelphia Eagles. In that game, Nassib recorded one sack, three tackles, and one pass deflection. As a rookie, he appeared in 14 games, and in 2017, he was promoted to the starting lineup.

On September 2, 2018, the Browns made the decision to release Nassib from their roster.The Tampa Bay Buccaneers took Nassib in off waivers on September 3, 2018, and signed him to their roster. In 2018, he had 6.5 sacks and 12 tackles for losses, both of which were greater than his career totals going into the season in both categories. He set new career highs in both of these categories. He spent two years with the Buccaneers, during which time he started 17 games and racked up 12.5 sacks in total.

On March 27, 2020, Nassib signed a contract with the Las Vegas Raiders that was worth a total of $25 million over three years. Of that total, $16.75 million was guaranteed. Nassib made his collegiate debut with a 37–12 victory over the Denver Broncos in Week 10 of the 2020 season. The interception was Nassib’s first career pick.

Nassib made a strip sack of Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson in overtime during the Raiders’ season opener in 2021 versus Baltimore, which was shown on Monday Night Football. The fumble was recovered by Las Vegas, which set up the game-winning score in a 33–27 victory for the Raiders. During that game, he made history by being the first openly gay player in the history of the NFL to participate in a game.

During the course of the season, he participated in 13 games and recorded 21 tackles in addition to 1 and a half sacks. On January 15, 2022, he made history by becoming the first openly gay athlete to compete in an NFL playoff game. On March 17, 2022, the Raiders made the decision to let him go during the offseason.

On June 21, 2021, during Pride Month Nassib issued a statement on his Instagram account declaring that he is homosexual, thereby becoming the first active NFL player to come out publicly. Since his announcement, Nassib has become the first openly gay player in the league. In the statement, he made a commitment to give a donation of one hundred thousand dollars to The Trevor Project, an organization that works to provide crisis intervention and prevent suicide among LGBTQ adolescents, and to continue to advocate for the organization’s work.
