Dabo Swinney – William Christopher “Dabo” Swinney is a football coach in the American sport of American football. He was born on November 20, 1969, and he is now the head coach at Clemson University. After Tommy Bowden resigned in the middle of the 2008 season, Swinney took over as head coach of Clemson University. Swinney has guided the team to national titles in both 2016 and 2018, and he is currently second only to Frank Howard in terms of the most victories ever achieved by a head coach at Clemson.

Swinney signed a new contract extension on September 8, 2022, which extends his tenure as head coach of the Clemson Tigers football team through the 2031 season and guarantees him a total compensation of $115 million over the course of the contract’s lifetime. This places him in a tie for second place with Nick Saban as the college football coach with the highest salary.

Dabo Swinney Career

Swinney spent his childhood in Pelham, Alabama, and went on to pursue his education at the University of Alabama, where he participated in the Crimson Tide football program as a walk-on wide receiver in the year 1989. He was a member of the Crimson Tide’s 1992 National Championship squad and earned letters of recommendation while playing on three different teams from 1990 to 1992. Swinney received recognition as an Academic All-SEC and SEC Scholar Athlete Honor Roll member throughout both of his years as an undergraduate student at the University of Alabama.

Over the course of his three years at Alabama, he had seven receptions for 81 yards. In 1993, he graduated from the University of Alabama with a bachelor’s degree in commerce and business administration, and in 1995, he earned a master’s degree in business administration from the same university. During his time at college, Swinney was active in the Greek community and was initiated into the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity as a brother.

During the time that he was earning his Master of Business Administration at Alabama, Swinney worked as a graduate assistant for Gene Stallings.

After earning his master’s degree in business administration from the University of Alabama in December 1995, Swinney started working as a full-time assistant coach for the Crimson Tide, where he was in charge of the wide receivers and tight ends. He continued to serve in these capacities under the leadership of Mike DuBose, who succeeded Stallings. In the beginning of 2001, he was terminated along with the rest of DuBose’s crew.

Swinney was required to sit out the 2001 season in order to keep receiving benefits from Alabama in compliance with the rules of his contract, so he did not play during that year. Rich Wingo, his old strength coach at the University of Alabama, had recently become president of AIG Baker Real Estate in Birmingham and offered him a job there. Rich Wingo had coached him during his time at the University of Alabama. He did not serve as a coach between the months of April 2001 and February 2003; instead, he worked for AIG Baker Real Estate on a range of real estate development projects in the state of Alabama. These projects were located throughout the state.

Tommy Bowden, Swinney’s previous position coach at Alabama, extended an opportunity to hire him as the wide receivers coach at Clemson in 2002. Swinney accepted the post and started working there in 2003. In addition to that, he succeeded the well-known and long-time coordinator Rick Stockstill in the role of recruitment coordinator. Swinney proven to be an effective wide receivers coach in addition to being an outstanding recruiting coordinator. He coached the top receivers in the ACC and was recognized as one of the top 25 recruiters in the country by Rivals.com in 2007.
