Daniil Medvedev Career

At the 2015 Kremlin Cup, Medvedev made his debut in the ATP main draw, teaming up with Aslan Karatsev to compete in the doubles competition. In the first round, the duo prevailed against Aliaksandr Bury and Denis Istomin, but in the second round, they were eliminated by Radu Albot and Frantiek ermak.

At the 2016 Nice Open, Medvedev made his debut in the ATP singles main event as a qualifier, although he was ultimately defeated in three sets by Guido Pella. Three weeks later, at the Ricoh Open in 2016, he defeated Horacio Zeballos in straight sets to record his maiden victory on the singles circuit of the ATP World Tour.

Because of the statements that Medvedev made after the umpire made a decision that favored his opponent, he was kicked out of the second round of the Savannah Challenger competition, which was held in Georgia, United States. Medvedev believed that he had won a break point against his opponent Donald Young’s serve, but chair umpire Sandy French determined that Medvedev’s returning shot had gone out of the court. Following that, Medvedev stated that Young and French had a friendship.

He was disqualified in the middle of the play for reportedly ‘questioning the impartiality of the umpire based on her race,’ which is ironic given that both sides are black. In January of 2017, Medvedev made it all the way to the final of an ATP singles tournament. In the championship match of the Chennai Open, he was defeated in straight sets by Roberto Bautista Agut.

As a direct consequence of this, Medvedev reached a new high point in his professional career in the ATP rankings, moving from position 99 to position 65. During the month of February, he competed at both the Open Sud de France and the Open 13, where he was eliminated in the quarterfinals by Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Lucas Pouille, respectively.
