Doc Rivers becomes Milwaukee Bucks head coach, source says

American National Basketball Association veteran Doc Rivers has reportedly accepted an offer from the Milwaukee Bucks to become the team’s next coach, according to a person who has knowledge of the negotiations that took place.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Bucks announced that they were “working immediately” to hire their next head coach, Adrian Griffin, who had been the team’s first-year head coach. Griffin had missed 43 games during his tenure. Beginning in June of 2023, Griffin has been a member of the team.

The decision to fire Griffin was described as a “difficult decision to make during the season” by Bucks General Manager Jon Horst, who explained the decision in a statement.

Rivers coached the Philadelphia 76ers for three seasons before the organization announced in May of last year that they were going to split ways with him. This decision was made after the team suffered three consecutive losses in the Eastern Conference Semifinals.

The President of Basketball Operations for the Sixers at the time referred to Rivers as “one of the most successful coaches in the history of the National Basketball Association.”

During his career, the 62-year-old has also held the position of head coach for the Boston Celtics, the Los Angeles Clippers, and the Orlando Magic, the latter of which he guided to an NBA title in 2008.

“He does have experience competing in championships. According to O’Neal, “He does have experience dealing with large-name individuals, people who are considered to be superstars.” After such a lengthy period of time, he has only been able to make it through with just one championship, and I would love to see him win another one.

According to Rivers, he begins each new coaching season by assuring his players, “I am human and I’m going to do my best, but I’m going to make some mistakes here.” Rivers made this statement in an interview with Poppy Harlow of CNN, which took place in November.

As Rivers progressed through his career, he realized that a significant portion of coaching is similar to teaching.

“When I first started coaching, I made a mistake. It seemed to me that you were merely a basketball coach. That’s when I came to the realization that, no, you coach life, and that’s what makes you a great basketball player,” he said to Harlow.

Rivers emphasized that in order to be a champion, “you have to open up your heart.” He thinks this to be true no matter what.

You are going to need to take a step back. One must take a chance. It is imperative that you step outside of your confines. You are required to provide your full attention to the team. You need to just get over things. He went on to say that when you accomplish something like that, it all comes back to you.

At 30-13, the Bucks are tied for the second-best record in the National Basketball Association (NBA). On Wednesday, they will play home to the Cleveland Cavaliers.
