Elon Musk Career

In 1995, Musk, along with his brother Kimbal and Greg Kouri, established the company known as Zip2. Errol Musk was their financial backer, contributing a total of $28,000. The company advertised its Internet city guide to newspapers after developing it with maps, instructions, and yellow pages. They worked out of a modest office that they rented in Palo Alto, and Musk would spend every night building the website.

At some point in time, Zip2 was able to secure contracts with both The New York Times and the Chicago Tribune. The brothers were successful in convincing the board of directors to back out of a merger with CitySearch; on the other hand, Musk’s efforts to become CEO were unsuccessful. In February of 1999, Compaq paid a total of $307 million in cash to buy Zip2. Elon Musk was paid $22 million for his 7% ownership stake in the company.

Musk used $12 million of the money he made from the Compaq acquisition to fund the co-founding of X.com in the latter half of 1999. X.com was an internet company that provided financial services and e-mail payment services.

Over two hundred thousand users joined X.com in its first few months of existence, making it one of the first online banks to be insured by the federal government. Despite the fact that Musk was the one who started the company, investors viewed him as inexperienced and decided to replace him with Bill Harris, the CEO of Intuit, by the end of the year.

In February of 2004, Elon Musk led Tesla’s Series A round of financing. He spent $6.5 million, became the company’s largest stakeholder, and joined Tesla’s board of directors as chairman. Musk played an active role within the company and oversaw the design of the Roadster product, but he did not participate significantly in the day-to-day operations of the business.

Even as early as 2017, Musk voiced his interest in purchasing Twitter, and he had previously cast doubt on the platform’s dedication to protecting users’ right to free speech. Musk began buying Twitter shares in January 2022, and by April of that year  he had amassed a 9.2% stake, making him the company’s most important stakeholder. When this information became widely known to the public, the price of Twitter shares experienced the greatest intraday surge it had seen since the company’s initial public offering in 2013.
