Franz Wagner – Franz Jacob Wagner is a professional basketball player from Germany who currently competes for the Orlando Magic of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Wagner was born on August 27, 2001. He was a member of the Michigan Wolverines basketball team throughout his time in college.

Born and raised in Berlin, Wagner began his professional basketball career with the Basketball Bundesliga (BBL) club Alba Berlin. He was honored with the title of Best German Young Player by the BBL in 2019. Wagner has previously been a member of the German youth national teams, with whom he achieved success in the 2018 Albert Schweitzer Tournament, earning a gold medal.

Moritz Wagner, his older brother and a former standout for the University of Michigan’s basketball team, also currently plays for the Orlando Magic.

Franz Wagner Career

  • Wagner signed a dual contract for the 2018–19 season, allowing him to play for both Alba Berlin in the Basketball Bundesliga (BBL), the highest level of competition in Germany, and SSV Lokomotive Bernau in the ProB league, which is the third tier of competition in Germany. In May of 2019, he was awarded the title of Best Young Player by the BBL.
  • In the second game of the BBL Finals, which Bayern Munich won, Wagner led the squad in scoring with 14 points while making all six of his field goal attempts. By the time the season came to a close, he had recorded an average of 4.6 points while playing 12.4 minutes a game in the BBL. In the EuroCup, he saw limited action.In the NBA draft of 2021, the eighth overall pick went to the Orlando Magic, who used it to select Wagner.
  • On August 3, both he and another player selected in the lottery, Jalen Suggs, signed contracts with the Magic. On December 18, while playing against the Brooklyn Nets, Wagner recorded his first career double-double in the NBA by setting a career high with 11 rebounds, scoring 14 points, and dishing out 6 assists. In a game against the Milwaukee Bucks that took place on December 27, 2021, Wagner scored a career-high 38 points despite the Bucks’ 127–110 victory.
  • For his play in NBA games during the month of December, Wagner was selected as the Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month. Wagner recorded his second NBA double-double on January 12, 2022 against the Washington Wizards. During that game, he increased the number of assists he had ever recorded in a career from six to ten, and he also scored 14 points.
  • This was the first occasion in the history of the Magic that a rookie forward had ever finished a game with 10 or more assists. Following the conclusion of the 2021–2022 NBA season, he was honored with a spot on the first team of the NBA All-Rookie Team.
  • At the 2017 FIBA U16 European Championship, which was held in Podgorica, Montenegro, Wagner was a member of the German national team. His squad finished in 13th place overall despite his 7.4 point-per-game average in the five games they played. In 2018, Wagner had a scoring average of six points per game and helped Germany win the gold medal at the Albert Schweitzer Tournament, which was held in Mannheim, Germany. This tournament was for under-18 athletes.
  • He led his team to an 11th place finish at the 2019 FIBA U18 European Championship that was held in Volos, Greece, with an average of 13 points scored and 4.8 rebounds grabbed per game. Due to a back ailment, he was out for one game. He led Germany to a bronze medal at EuroBasket 2022 with an average of 16.1 points scored and 4 rebounds grabbed per game. The victory came in his hometown of Berlin against Poland.
