Geno Smith – Eugene Cyril Smith III is a quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks of the National Football League (NFL). He was born on October 10, 1990, and currently plays for the Seahawks. Before being selected by the New York Jets in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft, he was a collegiate football player at West Virginia University.

During his time there, he led the Mountaineers to multiple bowl games, broke numerous passing records, and won multiple honors. Due to injuries that he sustained during his final two years with the Jets, Smith finally lost his starting job as the team’s quarterback after two seasons in which he was inconsistent as the starting quarterback.

Geno Smith College Career

  • Smith was a member of the West Virginia Mountaineers football team from 2009 until 2012 while he was a student at West Virginia University. Smith attended West Virginia University and majored in English during his time there.
  • During his first year in college, Smith was the backup quarterback to Jarrett Brown, who was a senior at the time.During his first game of the regular season, which was played against Auburn, Smith completed five of eight passes for a total of fifty yards and threw an interception.                                                                                 
  • On subsequent occasions, he would participate in games against Syracuse, Marshall, and Louisville, as well as in the Gator Bowl game against Florida State.
  • While playing against Pittsburgh on November 26, Smith passed for 212 yards and three touchdowns, leading his team to a victory by a score of 35–10. He finished the following game against Rutgers with 352 passing yards and a touchdown, leading his team to a victory by a score of 35–14.
  • A loss against North Carolina State in the Champs Sports Bowl resulted in Smith finishing the 2010 season with 196 passing yards, a touchdown, and an interception. The game was played against North Carolina State.
  • Following the conclusion of his sophomore season, Smith finished with a completion percentage of 241 out of 372 throws for 2,763 yards, 24 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. Additionally, he carried the ball 106 times for 217 yards.

Professional Career

  • Smith’s performance at the NFL Scouting Combine was favorably received by scouts, who praised his agility and strong arm. However, they also pointed out that his ball placement needed to be improved. Smith was invited to participate in the combine.
  • It was generally agreed upon that Smith, along with EJ Manuel of Florida State, was one of the most promising prospects.
  • Smith was present for the first round of the draft since many scouts and experts of the game anticipated that he would be selected on that particular evening. However, Smith was not chosen, and EJ Manuel was the only quarterback to be selected in the first round of the college football draft.                                             
  • In the aftermath of the draft, Smith rejected to be interviewed by ESPN and had initially intended to go back home. However, he ultimately made the decision to attend the second day of the draft process.
  • On the 22nd of July, 2013, Smith signed a contract that was for $5 million over four years and included around $690,000 in working out bonuses.
  • On August 9, 2013, Smith made his debut in the professional realm by participating in the first preseason game, which was played against the Detroit Lions. In the second quarter, he suffered an ankle injury that forced him to leave the game as he completed six of seven throws for 47 yards.
  • In the final four games of the season, the Jets won three of them, and Smith showed signs of incremental improvement. Smith completed 16 of his 25 throws for 219 yards, a touchdown, and an interception during the club’s victory over the Raiders in Week 14, which resulted in a 37–27 victory.
  • In addition, Smith carried the ball five times for fifty yards, which helped the team maintain its position in the postseason race. Smith went on to have a successful performance in the subsequent game, which was played against the Carolina Panthers, until he threw a costly pick six in the fourth quarter.
  • During the first game of the 2014 season, Smith was selected to start. During the first game of the season, which was a victory over the Raiders by a score of 19–14, he recorded a passing performance that included 221 yards, a touchdown, and an interception.
  • In the subsequent game, which was played away from home against the Green Bay Packers, he threw for 176 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. In addition, he carried the ball seven times for 26 yards and a touchdown. The game ended in a loss by a score of 31–24.
  • On the 20th of May in the year 2020, Smith re-signed with the Seahawks. During the final 16 minutes and 26 seconds of the game, he made his one and only appearance, which was during a victory over his previous team, the Jets, in Week 14 by a score of 40–3.

  • Smith was given the honor of being named for his first Pro Bowl on December 21st, 2022. Smith completed 18 of 29 passes for 183 yards and two touchdowns during the Seahawks’ victory over his old team, the Jets, in Week 17 by a score of 23–6.
  • This victory let the Seahawks to remain in the running for the playoffs and eliminated the team that had chosen him.
