Giannis Antetokounmpo – Giannis Sina Ugo Antetokounmpo is a professional basketball player for the Milwaukee Bucks of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He was born in Adétkunb on December 6, 1994. Antetokounmpo is of Greek and Nigerian descent.

The epithet “Greek Freak” was given to Antetokounmpo not only because of his size, speed, strength, and ball-handling talents, but also because he is originally from Greece. Antetokounmpo is widely considered to be not only one of the best power forwards of all time but also one of the best European players of all time.

 In 2011, he started playing for the club’s senior squad before entering the 2013 NBA draft. The Bucks ended up selecting him with the 15th overall pick in that round.

Giannis Antetokounmpo Career

  • Antetokounmpo played for the senior men’s squad of Filathlitikos in the semi-professional Greek B Basket League (Third Division) during the 2011–12 season. This league is considered the third division of Greek basketball.
  • Antetokounmpo signed a four-year deal with the Spanish team CAI Zaragoza in December 2012, just a few days after he turned 18 years old. The contract reportedly included NBA buyouts after each season. Other significant teams in Europe, such as Barcelona and Anadolu Efes, had shown interest in signing him at one point or another.                                                                                     
  • Antetokounmpo formally declared that he wanted to be drafted into the NBA on April 28, 2013, making him eligible for that year’s draft. The Milwaukee Bucks selected him 15th overall, which was in line with the expectations that he would be taken in the first round of the draft. The Bucks gave him a rookie scale deal on July 30, 2013, and he signed it that day.
  • Antetokounmpo and the Bucks extended their partnership on September 19, 2016, by signing a contract extension worth a total of $100 million over the next four years.
  • Antetokounmpo would have his breakout season in his fourth year with the Bucks, during which he would continue to enhance his statistical production and rise to the level of a superstar.
  • Antetokounmpo set a new career high for points scored in the playoffs with 28 on April 15, 2017, when Game 1 of their first-round playoff series against the third-seeded Toronto Raptors was won 97–83 by the Bucks.
  • On September 18, 2020, Antetokounmpo was honored with the Most Valuable Player title for the second year in a row.
  • In doing so, he became one of only three players in NBA history to win both the Most Valuable Player and NBA Defensive Player of the Year titles in the same season, joining Michael Jordan and Hakeem Olajuwon.
  • Antetokounmpo tallied 32 points, 14 rebounds, and seven assists in the opening game of the 2021–2022 NBA season, which the Bucks won 127–104 over the Nets. The ceremony before to the game, in which he was presented with his first NBA championship ring, took place on October 19, 2021.
  • Antetokounmpo led both teams in points, rebounds, assists, and blocks during the Bucks’ 118–99 victory over the Golden State Warriors on January 13, 2022. He finished the game with 30 points, 12 rebounds, 11 assists, and 3 blocks, which were the most of any player on either side.
  • Antetokounmpo set a new career best in scoring on January 3, 2023, when he finished with 55 points, 10 rebounds, and seven assists in the Milwaukee Bucks’ 123–113 victory over the Washington Wizards.
  • The following night, Antetokounmpo defeated the Toronto Raptors 104–101 in overtime while recording his 31st career triple-double. He did it by scoring 30 points, grabbing 21 rebounds, and dishing out 10 assists.
  • On October 23, 2023, Antetokounmpo signed a contract extension with the Bucks that was worth a total of $186 million over three years.

National Team Career

  • Antetokounmpo made his debut with the Greek Under-20 national team in July 2013, competing at the 2013 FIBA Europe Under-20 Championship. This was Antetokounmpo’s first time competing for Greece.
  • In the team’s 10 contests, he contributed an average of 8.0 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 2.2 assists while helping Greece achieve an 8–2 record and a fifth-place overall finish.
  • Antetokounmpo made his debut with the senior men’s Greek national basketball team in 2014, the same year that Greece finished ninth overall in the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup with a record of 5–1.
  • Antetokounmpo helped Greece achieve this result by contributing to the team’s 5–1 record. Over the course of the six contests, he shot 45.8% from the floor and finished with 6.3 points and 4.3 rebounds on average.
  • In August of 2022, he was readmitted to the squad. Antetokounmpo tallied a career-high 40 points for the national team on August 25, 2022. He also pulled down 8 rebounds and dished out 5 assists in the team’s 94–100 overtime loss to Serbia in the 2023 World Cup qualifiers.
