Barnes was born on December 9, 1997. He is the son of Paul Barnes, who played football professionally in the past. Through his grandparents, he can trace his ancestry back to Scotland. Barnes participated in the Leicestershire & Rutland Schools Football Association competition that was known as The Rice Bowl in 2009 while playing for Greenfield Primary School. Following his graduation from Greenfield High School, he continued his education at Leysland High School and Countesthorpe College.

Harvey Barnes Career

Barnes is a product of the Leicester City academy, which he joined on June 8, 2007, when he was nine years old. Barnes’s first game was on June 8, 2007. On June 25, 2016, he became the club’s first professional player by signing a contract with the organization. On December 7, 2016, he made his first appearance with the first team, coming on as a second-half replacement in a 5–0 loss to Porto in the UEFA Champions League.

Barnes was a key contributor for Leicester City U23 in the first half of the 2016–17 Premier League 2 season, as he not only scored five goals but also assisted on five more. Barnes was one of six players older than 18 years old who were selected to play for the England under-18 team that competed in the 2017 Toulon Tournament.

On May 29, 2017, he made his debut for the national team, appearing as a substitute in a win over Angola, his group’s adversary. On June 1, 2017, Barnes scored twice as the United States defeated Cuba by a score of 7–1. Barnes scored another brace in the competition’s semi-final on June 8, 2017, leading England to a 3–0 victory against Scotland.

Two days later, on June 10, 2017, Barnes scored his penalty in a penalty shoot-out during England’s final match against the Ivory Coast, which resulted in England’s victory. Barnes, along with his colleague George Hirst and Chico Banza of Angola, finished the competition with four goals, making them all joint recipients of the Golden Boot, which is given to the competition’s highest scorer.

Barnes was given a call up to the England under-20 team on September 28th, 2017, and he made his debut with the team on October 5th, 2017, when they defeated Italy 5–1 on the road in a friendly match.

Barnes was selected to be a part of the 23-man England squad that will compete at the 2019 UEFA European Under-21 Championship on May 27, 2019.

Barnes received his first call-up to the senior England team on October 1, 2020. This marked his debut with the squad. His first game for England was a 3–0 win over Wales, in which he came on as a substitute in the 76th minute. Due to the fact that Barnes’ maternal grandparents were both born in Scotland, he is also eligible to play for Scotland.
