Hugh Bonneville – Hugh Richard Bonniwell Williams is an English actor. He was born on November 10, 1963. His most well-known role was Robert Crawley, Earl of Grantham, whom he played from 2010 to 2015 on the ITV historical drama series Downton Abbey.

His work on the program garnered him three Screen Actors Guild Awards, a Golden Globe nomination, and two straight Primetime Emmy nods. In the feature films Downton Abbey and Downton Abbey: A New Era, he played the same character again.

  • When he first started acting, Bonneville chose Richard Bonneville as his stage name rather than Hugh Williams because there was already a well-known dramatist by that name. Richard Bonneville is a variant of his middle names. After ten years of performing under the name Richard Bonneville, he decided to alter his name to Hugh
  • The Open Air Theatre in Regent’s Park was the location of Bonneville’s very first performance on a professional stage. In 1987, he became a member of the National Theatre, where he acted in a number of plays. In 1991, he joined the Royal Shakespeare Company, and from 1992 to 1993, he performed the role of Laertes in Kenneth Branagh’s production of Hamlet.
  • In “The Two Gentlemen of Verona,” he portrayed the role of Valentine. In “‘Tis Pity She’s a Whore,” he played Bergetto. In “The Alchemist,” he first played Kastril and then Surly.                                     
  • Take a Girl Like You (2000) and Armadillo were two of the BBC television series in which he played more malicious characters. These roles prepared him for his roles as the tyrannical Henleigh Grandcourt in Daniel Deronda and the psychotic murderer James Lampton in The Commander series. In the movie “Love Again,” he has the role of the poet Philip Larkin.            
  • In the ITV historical drama Downton Abbey, he played the role of Robert, Earl of Grantham, a part that he also played in the 2019 film adaptation of the show.
  • His run on the show lasted from 2010 until 2015. In the movie Downton Abbey: A New Era, which was released in 2022, Bonneville once again played the part of Robert Crawley.
  • Bonneville served in that capacity throughout the duration of the Channel 4 program The Hotel, which ran from 2011 to 2014. On the 18th of November 2012, Bonneville made an appearance on stage at St. Martin’s Theatre in the West End for a production of Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap, which holds the record for being the play that has been performed the most times.
  • In 2019, Bonneville portrayed C. S. Lewis in the performance of Shadowlands at the Chichester Festival Theatre, alongside the actresses Liz White and Andrew Havill.
  • Bonneville made an appearance on the ITV program DNA Journey on March 8, 2023, alongside the comedian John Bishop.
