Ja Morant – Temetrius Jamel “Ja” Morant is a professional basketball player from the United States who currently plays for the Memphis Grizzlies of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Morant was born on August 10, 1999. In 2019, he was a sophomore on the Murray State Racers basketball team, where he was selected to the first team of All-Americans by the majority of the coaches during his time there.

In spite of the fact that he was voted All-Region Most Valuable Player three times and earned All-State honors while attending Crestwood High School in Sumter, South Carolina, Morant was only sparingly recruited by NCAA Division I institutions and was not ranked by recruiting agencies.

Ja Morant College Career

  • Morant made his debut for Murray State on November 10, 2017, which resulted in a victory over Brescia University of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) by a score of 118–61. He finished with seven points and eleven assists, which was the most on the team.
  • On the 12th of December, 2017, he achieved his first double-double in his professional career by scoring 10 points, grabbing 12 rebounds, and dishing out 6 assists in a game that Saint Louis won 69–55.                                                             
  • On December 28, he achieved his first triple-double by scoring 11 points, grabbing 10 rebounds, and dishing out 14 assists in a victory over Eastern Illinois by a score of 80 – 52.
  • Some scouts started taking notice of Morant during the summer of his second season in 2018, when he was still in his sophomore year. It was “an honor” for him to be invited to Chris Paul’s Elite Guard Camp, which he was one of twenty players who were invited to attend.
  • As a result of the losses of important players Jonathan Stark and Terrell Miller, Morant was able to assume a leadership position for Murray State at the start of his sophomore season. In his first game of the season, which was a victory over Wright State by a score of 74–53, he racked up 26 points and 11 assists.
  • It was announced on January 10, 2019, that Morant has been included on the top 25 watch list for the John R. Wooden Award during the midseason.
  • On the same day, he broke the school record for most assists in a single game with 18, while also scoring 26 points against UT Martin. He finished the game with a perfect score.

Professional Career

  • During the 2019 NBA draft, the Memphis Grizzlies selected Morant with the second overall pick. He inked a contract with the Grizzlies on July 2, 2019, paying a total of $39.6 million over the course of four years. A loss to the Miami Heat by a score of 101–120 marked Morant’s first game in the National Basketball Association (NBA).
  • He started the game and finished with 14 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, a steal, and a block. In a victory over the Charlotte Hornets by a score of 117–115 on November 13, he not only achieved his first career double-double by scoring 23 points and drawing 11 assists, but he also made a layup that proved to be the game-winning basket.                                                                                                 
  • Morant set a new career high with 44 points on December 23, 2020, while also recording nine assists, two rebounds, and two steals in a game against the San Antonio Spurs. The game ended in a loss for the Spurs by a score of 131–119.
  • Morant led Memphis to a 117–112 overtime victory over the Golden State Warriors on May 21, 2021, in the newly implemented play-in tournament. With the eighth and final playoff spot on the line, Morant recorded 35 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists to lead Memphis to victory. This victory secured the Grizzlies’ first postseason berth in four seasons.
  • Morant led the Memphis Grizzlies to a 132–121 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers in the first game of the season, which took place on October 20, 2021. He finished with 37 points and six assists.
  • His performance on October 24 was a loss to the Los Angeles Lakers by a score of 121–118, but he still managed to score 40 points and throw out 10 assists.
  • In the third game of the first round of the playoffs, which took place on April 21, 2022, Morant led the team to a victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves by a score of 104–95. He finished with 16 points, 10 assists, and 10 rebounds overall.
  • A triple-double in the postseason was a first for the Grizzlies franchise in their entire history. Morant finished with 30 points, 13 rebounds, and nine assists in Game 5, which resulted in a victory by a score of 111–109. He hit the game-winning layup with approximately one second remaining.
  • Morant achieved his eighth career triple-double on January 29, 2023, when he defeated the Indiana Pacers by a score of 112–100. He did this by scoring 27 points, grabbing 10 rebounds, and dishing out 15 assists.
  • An altercation between associates of Morant and players of the Indiana Pacers, whom the club had played on January 29, 2023, was described in an article that was published by The Athletic on February 5, 2023.
  • Two months after the initial punishment, on May 14, he was barred from all team activities by the Grizzlies for flashing a gun during another Instagram Live session, this time on his friend Davonte Pack’s account.
