Jim Ratcliffe Career

  • Ratcliffe’s initial work was with the oil company Esso; however, he then made the decision to develop his abilities in the field of finance by studying management accounting and obtaining an MBA from London Business institution between the years 1978 and 1980 (he later gave £25 million to the institution in 2016).
  • In 1989, he became a member of the private equity firm Advent International in the United States.
  • Ratcliffe was one of the co-founders of Inspec, the company that ultimately leased the property formerly occupied by BP Chemicals in Antwerp, Belgium. In 1998, Ratcliffe established INEOS in Hampshire with the intention of purchasing Inspec as well as the freehold for the Antwerp location.
  • When Ratcliffe moved the headquarters of INEOS from Hampshire to Rolle in Switzerland in April of 2010, he was able to reduce the amount of annual taxes paid by the company by £100 million.
  • It was reported in February 2019 that INEOS would invest one billion pounds (£1 billion) in the oil and chemical sectors of the United Kingdom. This investment would involve an update of the Forties pipeline system, which is responsible for transferring a major percentage of the United Kingdom’s North Sea oil and gas.
  • In October of 2021, Ratcliffe made the announcement that he intended to invest more than €2 billion (about £1.7 billion) in electrolysis projects around Europe in order to produce zero-carbon green hydrogen.
  • INEOS announced in March 2019 that it planned to shut down its manufacturing unit in Middlesbrough unless it was granted permission to ‘defer compliance’ with EU regulations that were designed to avoid air and water pollution.
  • An examination of the information provided by the Environment Agency (EA) reveals, in addition, that the plant committed 176 violations of its permits between the years 2014 and 2017.
  • A decision made by New Zealand Rugby in 2021 to accept sponsorship from INEOS for a period of six years was condemned by Greenpeace as being incompatible with the “clean green” principles held in New Zealand.
