John Ross Career
In 2013, Ross was a true freshman at Washington and participated in all 13 of the school’s games. At the end of the season, he finished with 16 receptions for 208 yards and one touchdown as a receiver. Additionally, he had 720 yards and a touchdown in kick return yardage. He participated in 13 out of the 14 games that took place in 2014, starting seven times as a receiver and four times as a cornerback.
During that season, he had 17 receptions for 371 yards and four touchdowns as a receiver, 12 tackles and an interception as a cornerback, and 938 return yards and two touchdowns on returns. All of these statistics were career highs. Ross was sidelined for the entire 2015 season after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) while participating in spring practices.
After recovering from his injuries in 2016, Ross returned to action against Rutgers and had his first game back against the Scarlet Knights with five receptions for 90 yards, two receiving touchdowns, and a kick return touchdown. On January 3, 2017, Ross revealed that he was going to skip his senior season in order to participate in the NFL Draft instead.
Following his graduation from college, draft gurus and pundits projected that Ross would be picked in the first round of the selection. Before the combine, NFL analyst Bucky Brooks ranked him as the second best wide receiver in the league and regarded him to be one of the finest in the position. Due to his status as a leading wide receiver prospect, he was invited to participate at the NFL Combine, where he ran a record time of 4.24 seconds in the 40-yard sprint.
Ross completed the race with a time of 4.22 seconds, however he suffered a calf strain when pushing himself up at the very end. As a result of the damage to his calf, he was unable to successfully complete all of the prescribed combine workouts or run his second attempt at the 40-yard sprint. Ross was present at Washington’s Pro Day, but he did not participate in any of the team’s individual drills.
The following day, he underwent surgery to repair a tear in the labrum that was located in his shoulder. ESPN listed him as the third best wide receiver prospect in this year’s draft, while Sports Illustrated and NFLDraftScout.com placed him as the second best wide receiver prospect.
On July 26, 2023, Ross delivered the news to the Chiefs that he was going to retire. After that, he was transferred to the reserve list or retired altogether.
