Kandi Burruss Career

  • Precise was the name of the band that LaTocha Scott was a member of before Xscape came along and stole his spotlight. Tamika, Scott’s sister, first got to know Kandi Burruss when they were both students at the Tri-Cities performing arts high school in East Point, Georgia. The three of them started singing together and eventually brought on a fourth member, Tamera Coggins, whose tenure with the band was rather brief.
  • Soon after that, Tameka “Tiny” Cottle was requested to try out for the group, and Xscape was formally established as a group. After making their much anticipated debut at BET’s Teen Summit in 1992, the ladies were put in contact with record executive Ian Burke, who would go on to become the group’s manager.
  • The band made their debut with the album Hummin’ Comin’ at ‘Cha, which was published on October 12, 1993. The album reached its highest position on the Top R&B Albums chart at number three, as well as number seventeen on the overall Billboard 200.
  • Kandi released her first studio album, titled Hey Kandi…, in the year 2000. This album gave birth to the hits “Don’t Think I’m Not” and “Cheatin’ on Me.” On the Billboard Hot 100, “Don’t Think I’m Not” made it all the way up to number 24. The album only managed to reach position #72 on the Billboard 200, which is far lower than the lead single’s performance.
  • After taking some time off from making music, Burruss created her debut extended play, which was titled The Fly Above EP and was made available on October 29, 2009.
  • After her record deal with Capitol Records fell through, Burruss made the announcement in December 2009 that she had signed a contract with Asylum Records instead.
  • The lyrical rhythm of Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You,” released in 2017, has been compared to that of “No Scrubs,” specifically in the pre-chorus line that goes, “Boy, let’s not talk too much/ Grab on my waist and put that body on me.”
  • “Shape of You” ranks as one of the most successful singles of all time, and the parallels have been made because of the similarities between the two songs.
  • She participated in the third season of The Masked Singer in 2020, under the stage name “Night Angel.” It was originally requested that Burruss compete in the first season, but she was unable to do so owing to other responsibilities in her life at the time.
  • However, after seeing T-Pain play live and being approached by producers once more, she started to have second thoughts. Burruss was the first woman to ever win her season on the show, making her victory historic. Burruss made her debut as a star on the Bravo show Kandi & The Gang in the year 2022.
