Kostya Tszyu Career

  • Tszyu almost immediately began to increase the level of difficulty of his opponents. In his fourth fight as a professional, he faced Juan Laporte, a former champion of the WBC featherweight division, and won by unanimous decision after ten rounds.
  • In his sixth fight, he knocked out fellow contender Sammy Fuentes in the first round. Fuentes was his opponent. After being soundly defeated by Tszyu in 1993, Fuentes would go on to win a world title years later. Steve Larrimore, Larry La Crousiere, and Robert Rivera traveled to Australia to fight Tszyu, but none of them lasted more than two rounds.
  • When he fought IBF Light Welterweight Champion Jake Rodrguez in Las Vegas, Nevada in 1995, he was given the opportunity to fight for a world title for the first time. Tszyu won the world championship by stopping Rodriguez in the sixth round with a knockout punch.
  • After that, he successfully defended the world title by knocking out his opponents in the 12th round, including former Super Featherweight and Light Welterweight World Champion Roger Mayweather, Hugo Pineda, Cory Johnson, and Jan Bergman, respectively.
  • Tszyu then started working toward his goal of bringing together all of the belts. In 2001, he began his career by challenging Sharmba Mitchell, who was the WBA Champion at the time. He defeated Mitchell by technical knockout after seven rounds, despite Mitchell having suffered a knee injury both in training and during the fight.
  • His second bout was against a German Turk by the name of Oktay Urkal. Tszyu closed the year 2001 by winning back his IBF championship by knocking out Zab Judah in the second round of their unification fight. Judah was the reigning champion at the time.
  • On January 19, 2003, Tszyu began the year by successfully defending his championship against Jesse James Leija, a former world champion, by scoring a knockout victory in the sixth round.
  • Tszyu made an appearance on the Australian television program Long Lunch Today on April 19th, 2010. During the show, he refuted rumors that he had retired and stated that he would fight again if it were possible for him to do so against Shane Mosley, Manny Pacquiao, or Floyd Mayweather Jr.
