Kyle McCord Career

  • McCord spent the majority of his first year at Ohio State following in the footsteps of C. J. Stroud, who was the starting quarterback. During the time that Stroud was rehabilitating from a shoulder injury, he made one start during the game versus Akron.
  • In the game, McCord was named the Big Ten Conference Freshman of the Week after completing 13 of 18 passes for 319 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. The game resulted in a victory for the team, which was 59–7.
  • After the conclusion of the season, he finished with 416 passing yards, two touchdown passes, and two interceptions in the five games that he participated in. At the beginning of his sophomore season, McCord was the second-string quarterback for the Ohio State Buckeyes.
  • He had seven appearances, all of which were off the bench, and he completed sixteen of twenty pass attempts for a total of 190 yards and one touchdown.
  • Over the course of spring practices and preseason training camp, McCord and Devin Brown engaged in a fierce competition to determine who would follow Stroud as the starting quarterback for Ohio State in 2023.
  • It was announced that he would be the starting quarterback for the Buckeyes’ first game of the season, despite the fact that head coach Ryan Day claimed that the competition was still going on.
  • Following a victory over Youngstown State in week 2 by a score of 35–7, McCord was selected as the starting quarterback for the remainder of the 2023 season. He completed 14 of 20 passes for a total of 258 yards and three touchdowns.
  • During the fourth week of the season, Ohio State defeated Notre Dame by a score of 17–14. McCord would lead a game-winning drive in the final two minutes of the game. McCord threw for 271 yards and two touchdowns in Week 13 against the Michigan Wolverines.
  • However, he also threw an interception to Rod Moore on Ohio State’s last drive, which resulted in Ohio State’s loss by a score of 30–24.
  • In the days leading up to Ohio State’s participation in the Cotton Bowl Classic in 2023, McCord started using the NCAA transfer site. The reason for this was that Ryan Day had already stated that he would not commit to McCord as the starting quarterback going forward.
