Las Vegas Raiders beat sloppy KC Chiefs with two defensive TDs on Christmas

A pair of defensive touchdowns were scored by Las Vegas for the second week in a row, including a pick-six of the struggling Patrick Mahomes. On Monday, the resurgent Raiders defeated the sloppy Kansas City Chiefs by a score of 20-14, so maintaining their slender prospects of making the postseason.

To assist the Raiders (7-8) break a six-game losing streak to the Chiefs, big defensive tackle Bilal Nichols returned a fumble eight yards for a touchdown, and seven seconds later, Jack Jones took an interception 33 yards for another score. Both of these victories helped the Raiders break their losing streak.

By putting on one of their poorest performances since Mahomes took over as head coach, Kansas City (9-6) missed out on a chance to win the AFC West for the seventh year in a row.

In addition to two defensive touchdowns, Harrison Butker missed a chip-shot field goal, penalties and dropped passes were once again a concern, and twice in the second half, they were unable to convert on fourth down.

Mahomes’ touchdown pass to Justin Watson with 2 minutes and 42 seconds remaining gave the Chiefs a chance to win the game. On the subsequent play, however, Zamir White of the Raiders was able to get loose for a gain of 43 yards, so gaining a first down that enabled them to run out the clock.

At the end of the game, Mahomes completed 27 of 44 passes for 235 yards and an interception. He came close to throwing a second pass, but the review reversed it.

The Raiders were able to prevail despite having a poor day offensively, despite the fact that they were playing without their injured running back Josh Jacobs.

Andy Reid, the coach of the Kansas City Chiefs, had spent the past three weeks bemoaning the sloppy play that continued to cost the team that had just won the Super Bowl.

When Mahomes was the quarterback, it was only the second time that they started a game with three-and-outs on consecutive series. They were kept to minus-18 yards in the first quarter, which is the second-worst total for the team since at least 1991 according to the records.

Also, the reigning Most Valuable Player of the league was sacked twice over those two series, and two additional offensive penalties only made the situation much more dire.

It wasn’t until Isiah Pacheco scored a touchdown off of a direct snap that went 12 yards that the Chiefs were finally able to take the lead. Las Vegas had punted the ball back after the Chiefs had received it.

Although Pacheco once again took a direct snap, this time he attempted to pass off the ball to Mahomes. However, Mahomes was unsuccessful in the exchange, and Nichols, a defensive end for the Raiders who weighs 315 pounds, was there to pick it up and run for a score.

Against their old adversary in the division, the Raiders took a 17-7 lead thanks to their fourth defensive touchdown in the past two weeks, which was also their second touchdown in a matter of seven seconds.

After that, Jones gave the impression of trying to play the role of the Grinch by pretending to hand the ball to a child in the crowd who was dressed in Chiefs gear.

The Chiefs’ Butker, who is considered to be one of the most accurate kickers in the National Football League, missed a chip-shot field goal just before halftime. The Raiders then added a field goal late in the third quarter to take a 20-7 lead going into the fourth quarter. The Chiefs’ score remained 17-7 at that point.
