Lil Buck Career

At the age of 19, Buck made the journey to Los Angeles in order to pursue a career in dancing.  In the year 2010, he had an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and also contributed to the choreography of the music video for the song “Tightrope” by Janelle Monáe.

In 2011, director and former ballet dancer Damian Woetzel met Lil, and later that year, he collaborated with Buck and Yo-Yo Ma on a performance of “The Swan” that was viewed millions of times on YouTube. Woetzel learned about Lil Buck from his wife Heather Watts, who discovered an old video footage of Buck freestyle dancing to Camille Saint-Saens’ Le cygne (The Swan) on YouTube.

The performance took place at a New Ballet Ensemble (NBE) school performance in West Memphis, Arkansas. Woetzel’s wife Heather Watts introduced her husband to Lil. Buck was first exposed to the music of Saint-Saens by NBE director Katie Smythe, who also presented the concept of adapting jookin’ to classical music. Yo-Yo Ma was shown the video by Watts, who initially showed it to her husband Woetzel. Woetzel subsequently showed it to Ma.

They did end up getting together, and Buck’s ballet teacher, Katie Smythe, was the one who made the introductions by contacting each other on Facebook. Buck was recognized as one of the “25 to Watch” by Dance Magazine in the year 2012.

In the same year, he appeared as a model in a national advertisement for GAP and as a dancer in two videos for NOWNESS, one of which was directed by Benjamin Millepied, a ballet choreographer. Jacob Sutton, who also directed the other video, sent a more extensive cut of it to Cinedans, a film festival in the Netherlands that focuses on showcasing films that are based on dance.

Lil Buck gave a performance at the TEDxTeen conference that was held in New York City in March of 2014. In the month of April, he had an appearance in another dance video directed by Jacob Sutton and sponsored by Diesel. He also danced in the Spring debut of the New York City Ballet, which was choreographed by artist JR and soundtrack by musician Woodkid.

During the eleventh season of “So You Think You Can Dance,” Lil Buck served as a guest judge. Da Sweet Blood of Jesus, a film directed by Spike Lee and released in 2014, included his performance in the film’s opening credits.

Lil Buck Family, Relationship and Afair

Although he was born in Chicago, Lil Buck spent his childhood in Memphis. When he was 12 years old, his older sister introduced him to jookin by showing him some fundamental jookin dance routines in their living room. This is how he first learned about the dance.

As he gained more knowledge about the dance from the elders in the community, he began to devote less time to his other interests, such as painting and basketball, so that he could concentrate exclusively on enhancing his dancing ability. At the age of 17, he made an appearance in a jookin DVD  that was created locally and titled Memphis Jookin Vol. 1.
