Lucy Bronze Career

Because she was no longer able to play for Alnwick, Bronze started going to summer training camps in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Her mother had found out about these camps while looking for opportunities for her to continue playing football.  She also started playing for Sunderland, beginning at the under-12 academy level, in the year 2002.

Even though it was the girls’ squad that was located the closest to Alnwick, it was still some hours away, and Bronze has stated that between school and training, she did not have any time for anything else. When she was old enough (the idea of playing above her age group was again referred to the FA and declined), she played for Blyth Town WFC, a local side that had an under-14 girls’ squad competing in the Northern Girls Tyne Tees League. The travel was draining  and Bronze was shy coming to Sunderland.

She continued to train with Sunderland, albeit on a less consistent basis, and even competed at the under-15 level. Even though she was the captain of Sunderland’s under-16 team, she continued to play for Blyth Town when she reached this age.

Dorrance made a pledge to aid Bronze while she was in a summer camp in North Carolina. He used his connections at Arsenal to have someone go watch her play, and after that, she was brought into the England development system. Bronze’s goal was to play for England, but she noted that scouts never traveled up to Sunderland to watch her matches.

When Bronze was only fifteen years old and playing for Blyth Town, she was called up to the England under-17 squad in March of 2007. At the time, she was competing internationally. She was a member of the England young teams that competed and won at all age levels.

In January of 2010, she was invited to participate in a training camp for the England under-20 team. Following her participation in all three games at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in 2010, Bronze made her debut for the England under-23 team in a victory over Germany by a score of 2–1 in September of that same year.

At the tournament held in March 2013 at La Manga, with the under-23 squad, Bronze produced the shot that resulted in an own goal off a Norwegian defender in the closing minutes, leading to England’s victory by a score of 1-0.
