Lupita Nyong’o- Lupita Amondi Nyong’o is a Mexican-Kenyan actress. She was born on March 1st, 1983 in Mexico City. She has been honored with a number of awards, including the Academy Award and the Daytime Emmy Award, and she has been nominated for the Tony Award and the Golden Globe Award as well.

She was born in Mexico City, where her father was teaching at the time, but she spent her childhood in Kenya after moving there at the age of three. Her father is the Kenyan politician Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o. She received her bachelor’s degree in cinema and theatrical studies from Hampshire College, which she attended during her time at a university in the United States. Later in life, she moved to Hollywood and got a job as a production assistant there.

Lupita Nyong’o Career

  • When Nyong’o first started out in the film industry, she was a member of the production crew for many films, including The Constant Gardener , directed by Fernando Meirelles, The Namesake (2006), directed by Mira Nair, and Where God Left His Shoes (2007), directed by Salvatore Stabile.
  • She credits the British actor Ralph Fiennes, who played the lead role in The Constant Gardener, as a person who encouraged her to pursue a career in professional acting. In 2008, Nyong’o acted as one of the main characters in the short film East River, which was directed by Marc Grey and filmed in Brooklyn.
  • At the Yale School of Drama, where she is currently enrolled, Lupita Nyong’o is pursuing a master’s degree in acting. At Yale, she was in a number of theater performances, such as Doctor Faustus Lights the Lights by Gertrude Stein, Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya, and The Taming of the Shrew and The Winter’s Tale by William Shakespeare.                                                                                                   
  • Eclipsed is a play that was written by Danai Gurira and starred Lupita Nyong’o in the year 2015. Nyong’o played the leading part of an anonymous girl in the play. The drama is set in the anarchy of the Second Liberian Civil War, during which time the captured wives of a rebel officer join together to form a community.
  • Their lives remain relatively stable until the entrance of a new girl, who is portrayed by Nyong’o. This event causes the community’s equilibrium to be thrown off.Eclipsed became the Public Theater’s fastest-selling new production in recent history, and it also earned Nyong’o the Obie Award for Outstanding Performance.
  • Additionally in 2019, Nyong’o provided the narration for the documentary series Serengeti on the Discovery Channel. The series focuses on the animals that live in the habitat of the Serengeti.
  • Lupita Nyong’o discussed the scarcity of African women who narrate nature documentaries and how the Serengeti team urged her to use her native Kenyan accent for the series. She also touched on the topic of how there are not enough African women in the industry.
  • She also appeared as Asha, a Shame Wizard who acquired Lionel’s interest, in an episode of Human Resources (2022), an adult-oriented animated sitcom that was streamed on Netflix.
