Liverpool was able to salvage a draw against Man City thanks to Alexander-Arnold

The late goal scored by Trent Alexander-Arnold earned a point for Liverpool in their match against Manchester City, which took place at Etihad Stadium and featured the top two teams in the Premier League.

Erling Haaland scored the game’s first goal for the defending champions, Manchester City, after Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson made an error in clearing the ball. The game did not reach the heights of prior clashes between the key domestic powers of recent times.

It was his 48th match when he scored his 50th goal in the Premier League, making him the fastest player to reach that milestone. It also gave City a lead that they maintained until the game’s final stages.

Ruben Dias believed he had added City’s second, but his goal was ruled out for a foul on Alisson. Before Alexander-Arnold made Pep Guardiola’s team pay for a failure to kill off Liverpool, Alexander-Arnold made Pep Guardiola’s side pay for a failure to kill Liverpool off.

Alexander-Arnold had a difficult game defensively as he attempted to control the energetic Jeremy Doku, but he displayed his quality with a clean, low strike from the edge of the box that gave Ederson little chance to make a save.

While Liverpool will be content with a draw, Manchester City will continue to lead the standings but may feel as though they have thrown away a golden opportunity.

Man City left frustrated

Both City and their manager, Pep Guardiola, will be aware that they squandered an opportunity to deal a blow to the team that many analysts predict will be their most formidable rival for the crown this year.

City had the better opportunities and thought they had a decent case for a second goal when Manuel Akanji was ruled to have fouled Alisson at a corner before Dias tapped home the winner in the second half. City had the better chances and believed they had a solid case for a second goal when the referee made the call.

Haaland should have had more opportunities, the most agonizing of which came in the waning seconds of the game when his header went just a few inches wide of the far post.

Doku was a constant menace for City on the left side as he made life difficult for Alexander-Arnold, and Nathan Ake was exceptional in his efforts to ensure that Mohamed Salah was kept under control.

Guardiola was in constant motion in his technical area, and at one point the fourth official had to ask him to return there after he wandered yards down the touchline. In the second half, Guardiola turned to the home fans to demand more volume as City pushed for a second goal that would have probably secured all three points for City.

After the final whistle, Guardiola was then involved in what appeared to be an angry exchange of words with Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez, possibly betraying his feelings after a game that he would perceive to be one that got away from him.

Liverpool satisfied with a point

After Alexander-Arnold drilled Liverpool’s important equalizer past Ederson, he responded to the jeers from City’s fans by turning the taunts back on them.

It had not been the simplest afternoon for Alexander-Arnold because to Doku’s straight running and trickery, but his skill on the ball has never been questioned, and he showed it again to earn Liverpool a point. Alexander-Arnold’s performance earned Liverpool a point and helped Liverpool achieve a draw.

And the fact that Jurgen Klopp’s team appeared to be content with their share of the spoils as the game entered its final stages and then continued to take their time during the eight minutes of stoppage time proved that they were.

This season, Liverpool has demonstrated, like they have on several other occasions already, that they are a consistent threat that must be neutralized as soon as opportunities present themselves.

They were nowhere near their best, but a squad with this array of attacking potential, enhanced by Alexander-Arnold, always has a puncher’s chance, and they proved it again as they departed with an important point. They left with a point.
