  • Stoops succeeded Chuck Pagano as the defensive backs coach for the University of Miami Hurricanes in February 2001. Pagano had left his position to become the defensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns.

  • Stoops was hired on November 27, 2012, to take over as the head coach of the University of Kentucky football program. He succeeded Joker Phillips, who was let go following a 2–10 season in which the Wildcats failed to win a single game.

  • Kentucky was defeated by Iowa 21-0 in their bowl game, and starter quarterback Levis did not play because of a suspension. The victory streak of four straight bowl games for Kentucky came to an end when they were blanked.
  • On November 18, 2022, Stoops signed a contract extension that will keep him in Lexington through the 2030 season. This will keep him as the head coach of the Kentucky Wildcats.
