She competed in the individual all-around category at the Summer Olympics held in Los Angeles in 1984 and earned three medals total: one gold medal, two silver medals, and two bronze medals. Due to her incredible performance, she quickly became one of the most well-known athletes in the United States.

It was a momentous day for the United States when Mary Lou Retton became the first woman from the United States to win the all-around gymnastics gold medal in the Olympic Games.

Mary Lou Retton Career

  • When Retton was only eight years old, she watched on television as Nadia Comăneci defeated Olga Korbut, the defending Olympic two-event winner. This sparked her interest in the sport of gymnastics, and she began training in her hometown of Fairmont, West Virginia.
  • Retton went on to win four Olympic gold medals during her career. Gary Rafaloski served as her coach during the season. Following that, she made the decision to relocate to Houston, Texas, in order to train under Romanians Béla and Márta Károlyi.
  • The Károlyis had previously coached Nadia Comăneci before to their defection to the United States. Retton quickly began to establish a name for herself in the United States after beginning her training with the Károlyis.
  • In 1983, she won the American Cup and finished in second place in the United States Nationals, behind another Károlyi student named Dianne Durham.                                                                       
  • Retton was an outspoken supporter of the Reagan administration. She featured in a number of television spots supporting Ronald Reagan and also made an appearance at a rally for his reelection campaign just one month after the Olympics in her home state of West Virginia. Retton was a member of the United States Olympic Committee.
  • In 1985, she was honored by the American Academy of Achievement with the Golden Plate Award, which was presented to her by General Chuck Yeager, a member of the Awards Council. In the year 1992, Retton was honored by being inducted into the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame.
  • In 1997, Retton was recognized for her achievements in the gymnastics world and entered into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame. Retton made history when she became the first woman to be inducted into the Houston Sports Hall of Fame in January of 2020.
  • During the 1990s, Retton was employed as a spokeswoman for the American pharmacy chain Revco, and she appeared in various advertising for the company. Retton is affiliated with a wide variety of commercial products, including bowling and shampoo, among others.
  • She was the first female athlete to ever be featured on the front of a Wheaties box, and General Mills reported that sales of Wheaties increased as a direct result of her appearance. In 2019, Retton started working as a spokesman for the pain treatment lotion known as Australian Dream.
