Matt Canada Career

  • Early in his coaching career, Canada held positions at Indiana, Butler, Northern Illinois, and Wisconsin, among other schools. In 2011, Canada played a pivotal part in guiding Northern Illinois to the MAC championship, and in 2012, he played a pivotal role in guiding Wisconsin to the Big Ten Championship Game. Both of these accomplishments were a result of Canada’s contributions.
  • In 2016, Canada was signed on at Pitt to serve as the offensive coordinator. As a result of his performance during the 2016 season, he was selected as one of five candidates for the Broyles Award. This honor is presented yearly to the one who is regarded as the best assistant football coach at the collegiate level.
  • LSU announced on December 14, 2016, that they had hired Canada to serve as the school’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
  • He served in both capacities during the 2017 season, however on January 5, 2018, LSU and Canada came to an agreement that they would no longer be working together.
  • On January 22, 2018, Canada announced his intention to accept a position at the University of Maryland as the offensive coordinator.
  • After D.J. Durkin was placed on administrative leave following the death of Maryland Terrapins offensive lineman Jordan McNair on August 11, 2018, Canada was promoted to the position of interim head coach for the Maryland Terrapins. Jordan McNair was a member of the Maryland Terrapins football team.
  • On November 17, 2018, Maryland came very close to defeating Ohio State, which was ranked third, but ultimately fell short with a score of 52-51 after overtime. Maryland concluded the season with a record of 5-7 and was not selected to play in a bowl game.
  • The Pittsburgh Steelers announced on January 15, 2020 that they had hired Canada to serve as their quarterbacks coach.
  • On January 25, 2021, the Steelers gave Canada the position of offensive coordinator, displacing Randy Fichtner in that role. Canada has been the subject of criticism throughout his time as head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
  • This is primarily due to the fact that his playcalling has contributed to the Steelers offensive being ranked around the bottom of the league ever since Canada was appointed. On November 21st, 2023, the Steelers decided to part ways with Canada.
