Mo Farah Career

After moving to west London, Farah became a member of the Borough of Hounslow Athletics Club. When he was only 13 years old, he competed for Hounslow in the cross-country event in the London Youth Games in 1994.

In 1996, when he was only 13 years old, he competed in the cross-country championships for English schools and ended up finishing eighth. The year after that, he took home the first of five English school crowns he would eventually earn. Eddie Kulukundis, a philanthropist in the sport of athletics, saw Mo Farah’s skill and covered the legal fees to finalize his naturalization as a British citizen. This enabled Farah to travel to competitions without having to worry about obtaining a visa.

In the same year that Mo Farah started his training at St. Mary’s University in Twickenham, he won his first major title in the 2001 European Athletics Junior Championships in the 5000-meter race.  This was Farah’s first big victory. In the same year, Farah was selected to be one of the first two athletes to train at St. Mary’s Endurance Performance Centre, which had just opened its doors.

Before he became an athlete on a full-time basis later on in his career, he lived and trained at the college, as well as participated in several modules of an entrance course there. A new British indoor record in the 3000 meters was established by Farah in January of 2009, when he broke the previous record held by John Mayock with a timing of 7 minutes 40.99 seconds in Glasgow.

A few weeks later, he beat his personal record by more than six seconds with a time of 7 minutes 34.47 in the UK Indoor Grand Prix in Birmingham. This effort was hailed as “the best performance by a male British distance runner for a generation” by commentator Steve Cram.

A period of winter training at altitude in Ethiopia and Kenya is what Farah believes contributed to his current strong form.  At the European Indoor Championships held in Turin in March 2009, he won the 3000 meter event with a time of 7 minutes 40.17 seconds, earning him the gold medal.

At the 2009 World Championships in Athletics, Farah took part in the competition. He was in the leading pack early on in the 5000-meter race, and he eventually finished seventh, which was the best performance by a runner from Europe. Following the championships, he went on to win his first road race over 10 miles, the Great South Run. He did it in 46 minutes and 25 seconds, becoming the third fastest Briton in the process despite the fact that there were high gusts.
