Rebecca Adlington Career

  • In the freestyle swimming competitions at the Summer Olympics in 2008, Adlington competed for Great Britain in the 400-meter and 800-meter events, respectively. She was also supposed to participate in the 4×200-meter freestyle relay, but she was taken out of competition to rest in the preliminary round, and her team did not make it through to the final.
  • She finished the heats of the 400-meter freestyle event in a time of 4:02.24, which was fast enough to break the Commonwealth record. She finished the race in 4 minutes, 3.22 seconds, earning her an Olympic gold medal and beating out Katie Hoff of the United States in the final 20 meters to do so. The competition took place on August 11, 2008.
  • In 2009, Adlington stated that she struggled with the pressure placed on her ahead of the World Aquatics Championships in Rome. Although she swam a personal best, she only won bronze in the 400-meter freestyle event despite swimming a faster time than ever before.
  • At the European Swimming Championships held in Budapest in 2010, Adlington triumphed in the 400-meter freestyle event, but she was once again unsuccessful in winning a medal in her preferred 800-meter freestyle event, placing eighth. She was a member of the squad that won bronze in the 4 200 meter freestyle relay.
  • At the Summer Olympics held in London in 2012, Adlington earned a bronze medal in the women’s 800-meter freestyle event with a time of 8:20.32. She also won a bronze medal in the women’s 400-meter freestyle event with a time of 4:03.01.
  • Following the conclusion of the Games, Adlington declared that she would not run the 800-meter race again, nor would she participate in the Summer Olympics to be held in Rio in 2016.
