Rich Paul Career
- After the 2003 NBA draft, Paul became a member of James’ close group of pals, which also included Maverick Carter and Randy Mims, two of James’ boyhood acquaintances. Paul joined James after the draft.
- Later on, he would begin working for Creative Artists Agency under the direction of Leon Rose, who had negotiated LeBron James’ contract deal with the Cavaliers in 2006.
- In 2012, Paul and James both parted ways with Rose and CAA in order for Paul to launch his own sports agency known as Klutch Sports Group. In 2013, Paul enlisted the services of Mark Termini, a well-known and long-time agent and attorney, to handle the NBA contract talks for Klutch.
- The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) updated its regulations for agents in August 2019, making it mandatory for them to obtain a bachelor’s degree. The media dubbed it the “Rich Paul Rule,” and many people took it as a jab at Paul for not having graduated from college and for working with a high school prospect named Darius Bazley.
- Bazley made the decision to work as an intern for New Balance for a year before entering the 2019 NBA draft rather than attend Syracuse or even enter the NBA G League as he had originally planned.
- In an opinion piece that was published in The Athletic, Paul stated that the regulation would restrict people from backgrounds that are less prestigious, people of color, and those without the financial means to attend college from working as agents in the future so that NCAA officials could have more influence. After some time had passed, the NCAA reversed its position regarding the regulation modification.
- Paul established “Klutch Conversations” in 2020 during the NBA All-Star Weekend in collaboration with SocialWorks and General Mills in order to promote financial literacy among younger generations.
- Rich Paul was reportedly being sued by Nerlens Noel in August 2021 on the basis of a violation of fiduciary responsibility, breach of contract, and negligence for his role in Nerlens Noel’s decision to decline a $70 million contract offer from the Dallas Mavericks during the offseason leading up to the 2017–18 season.
- On January 11, 2023, the two parties finally came to an agreement, which resulted in Noel paying full commissions on a $5 million deal he signed in 2020 with the New York Knicks and Noel withdrew all legal precedings after the settlement was finalized.
