Sam Altman Bussiness Career

  • Loopt is a smartphone application for location-based social networking, and it was co-founded by Altman in 2005, when he was only 19 years old. However, despite Altman’s efforts as CEO to secure more than $30 million in venture money for the company, Loopt was unable to acquire traction with a sufficient number of customers.
  • It was purchased by the Green Dot Corporation in March of 2012 for a total price of $43.4 million. The next month after that, Altman and his brother Jack Altman established Hydrazine Capital together as co-founders. While working on Loopt, Altman became afflicted with scurvy.
  • In 2011, Altman was promoted to the role of partner at Y Combinator, having previously worked there on a part-time basis. Y Combinator’s co-founder, Paul Graham, announced the appointment of Sam Altman as the company’s president in February of 2014.
  • Altman stated in a blog post that was published in 2014 that the total valuation of companies that had received funding from Y Combinator had topped $65 billion. These companies include Airbnb, Dropbox, Zenefits, and Stripe.
  • In September of 2016, Altman made the announcement that his role as president of YC Group would be expanding to cover Y Combinator as well as other businesses.
  • Altman expressed his desire to grow Y Combinator to the point where it could invest one thousand new businesses per year. Additionally, he attempted to broaden the categories of businesses that Y Combinator provides funding for, particularly “hard technology” startups.
