Sam Howell Career

  • Howell made his way to Chapel Hill to begin his studies at the University of North Carolina in January 2019. He made history for the Tar Heels by becoming the first true freshman ever to win the job of starting quarterback for the team.
  • In his first game as a starter, he led his team to a victory over South Carolina in the first game of the season by throwing for 245 yards and two touchdowns. Howell passed for 401 yards and three touchdowns while leading his team to a victory over NC State by a score of 41–10.
  • As was the case with his sophomore season, substantial excitement surrounded Howell heading into his junior season. He was named to the watchlists of many awards and was also regarded as one of the best quarterbacks in the country. Howell’s junior season was very similar to his sophomore season.
  • Howell became the second quarterback in Tar Heels history to throw for more than 300 passing yards and 100 rushing yards in the same game when he accomplished this feat in week two of the season against Georgia State. Howell threw for 352 yards and three touchdowns while also rushing for 104 yards and two more touchdowns.
  • The next week, Howell posted back-to-back games of over 300 passing yards and 100 rushing yards, joining Lamar Jackson as the second Power 5 quarterback to do it since 2004. In the game against Virginia, Howell threw for 307 yards and five touchdowns while also rushing for 112 yards. Lamar Jackson was the first.
  • Because of an injury he sustained to the shoulder he did not throw with during the final play of overtime against Pittsburgh, he was unable to play in the game that followed against Wofford. The next week, he made his return in a game that they lost to NC State by a score of 34-30.
  • In that game, he threw for 147 yards, one touchdown, and an interception, and he also ran for two scores. At the end of the season, he threw for 3,056 yards and 24 touchdowns while also rushing for 828 yards and 11 touchdowns.
  • Howell was not selected until the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, when he was taken 144th overall by the Washington Commanders. This was contrary to the predictions that he would be selected early in the draft. On May 6, 2022, he became a rookie by signing a contract for four years.
  • After the squad was already out of the running for the playoffs by the time Week 18 of the 2022 season rolled around, Howell made his first career start and appeared in his first career game. A 26–6 victory over the Dallas Cowboys was his reward for completing 11 of 19 passes for 169 yards, as well as scoring a touchdown on the ground and through the air.
  • After competing against Jacoby Brissett in preseason, he would emerge victorious and keep his job as the starting quarterback for the 2023 season. Howell was sacked nine times and threw four interceptions as the Buffalo Bills defeated the Ravens 37-3 in Week 3 of the NFL season.
  • By the middle of November, he led the National Football League in passing yards with over 2,700, and he was on pace to shatter the record for most sacks taken in a single season by a quarterback, having taken 40 in the first seven games of the season.
