Sam Kerr – Samantha May Kerr OAM was born in Australia on 10 September 1993, and she is a professional soccer player who currently plays as a forward for Chelsea in the FA Women’s Super League. She is also the captain of the Australia women’s national team, known as the Matildas, and she has held that position since 2019.

It is generally agreed upon that she is one of the best forwards in the history of the sport. As of the year 2022, Kerr holds the record for most goals scored in the history of Australian international competition, as well as the most goals scored in the history of the National Women’s Soccer League  in the United States.

Sam Kerr Career

  • She began her professional career in 2008 with Perth Glory, where she played from the age of 15 to the age of 2012, before moving on to play for Sydney FC.
  • Kerr got her first senior international cap in 2009, when she was just 15 years old. Since then, she has competed for Australia in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup games in 2010, 2014, 2018, and 2022; the FIFA Women’s World Cup tournaments in 2011, 2015, 2019, and 2023; and the Summer Olympics in 2016 and 2020.
  • Kerr made her debut for Australia’s senior national team in a friendly match against Italy in February 2009, when she was just 15 years old. The match was played in Canberra, where Australia was defeated 5–1 by Italy. Kerr came on as a substitute in the 76th minute.
  • Kerr won her first international title after scoring her first goal for her country at the age of 16 in the final of the 2010 AFC Women’s Asian Cup versus North Korea. Her goal contributed to Australia’s 1–1 draw in full-time, which earned Kerr her first international honor                                                     
  • Kerr was one of seven players who were under the age of twenty when they were selected for Australia’s 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup roster by head coach Tom Sermanni in 2011. At the time, Kerr was only 17 years old.
  • At the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2020, which were held in 2021, Australia competed alongside the United States, Sweden, and New Zealand. In the first game, which they won 2–1, Kerr scored the only goal for them against New Zealand.
  • It was confirmed on July 3 that Kerr would be the captain of the Matildas’ 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup roster. This will be her fourth appearance in the World Cup, and it will take place on home soil this time.
  • Due to a calf injury, Kerr was unable to play in the first match of the series against Ireland. It was confirmed by the team that she would sit out the first two matches of the pool, but after that, there was widespread suspicion that she might sit out all of the matches and potentially even the entire competition.
