Shohei Ohtani Career

  • The Texas Rangers, the Boston Red Sox, the New York Yankees, and the Los Angeles Dodgers are among the organizations that have shown interest in Ohtani. He has indicated a desire to move immediately to the major leagues after graduating from high school.
  • On October 21, 2012, he made the announcement that he would be more interested in pursuing a career in Major League Baseball as opposed to turning professional in Japan.
  • Ohtani made his debut in the Fighters’ season-opening game on March 29, 2013, playing out of the right field position. He was only 18 years old at the time. It was decided that he will be included on the roster of the Pacific League for the All-Star Game in 2013.
  • His home drive to straightaway center at Kyocera Dome on September 7 against the Orix Buffaloes made him the first Japanese player to reach double digits in both home runs and victories. He became the first player in Japanese history to accomplish this feat.
  • As a pitcher, he participated in 65 games in 2017, with a record of 3–2 with a 3.20 earned run average, 29 strikeouts, and a batting average of.332, along with eight home runs and 31 runs batted in.
  • It was disclosed in September that Ohtani would make a request to be assigned to a different team at the conclusion of the season in order to engage in Major League Baseball competition in 2018. Nevertheless, in the beginning of October, he underwent surgery on his right ankle, which prevented that from occurring.
  • Ohtani reached an agreement with the Los Angeles Angels on December 8, 2017, and the deal was finalized. After the next day, the deal was finally concluded.
  • It was disclosed on December 13 that Ohtani had been diagnosed with a sprain of the anterior cruciate ligament (UCL) of the first degree in his right elbow. An injection of platelet-rich plasma was administered to him as a treatment for the damage.
  • An MRI revealed that Ohtani’s anterior cruciate ligament (UCL) had sustained fresh injury, prompting physicians to recommend that he have Tommy John surgery, as reported by ESPN on September 3, 2018.
  • On September 25, the Angels made the announcement that Ohtani has consented to the treatment, which would not allow him to return to the mound until the year 2020.
  • Ohtani made his first outing as a pitcher since September 2018, when he faced the Oakland Athletics on July 26, 2020. This was Ohtani’s first time throwing since that month. After allowing five runs to score, he was taken off the mound without recording an out, which resulted in him beginning the season with a loss and an infinite earned run average.
  • Major League Baseball implemented a new rule on March 22, 2022, which stipulates that a pitcher who is in the batting order may continue to participate in the game as a designated hitter even after they have been removed off the pitching mound.
  • It was because of Ohtani’s exceptional ability to play in both directions that the regulation became known as the “Ohtani rule” in a colloquial sense.
  • As of May 10, 2023, Ohtani achieved his 502nd career pitching strikeout by striking out Jeremy Peña of the Houston Astros. This accomplishment allowed him to surpass Babe Ruth on the list of all-time strikeouts.
  • In a game against the Tampa Bay Rays on August 19, 2023, Ohtani hit his 43rd home run and achieved his second grand slam of his career. Meanwhile, the Rays were defeated. It was a coincidence that he had hit his first grand slam of his career the year before, again against the Rays.

International Career

  • It was announced that Ohtani will be joining Japan’s Under-18 National Team, which ultimately competed in the 18U Baseball World Championship in Seoul in 2012 and ended up finishing in sixth place.
  • On the Japan National Baseball Team that competed in the 2017 World Baseball Classic, Ohtani was one of the 28 players on the roster; however, he was forced to withdraw from the competition due to an ankle injury.
  • It was during the 2023 World Baseball Classic when Ohtani participated as a member of the Japan National Baseball Team. Due to his outstanding hitting and pitching accomplishments during the group round of the competition, he was awarded the Most Valuable Player award for Pool B.
  • After batting.435 and pitching to a 1.86 earned run average, he was awarded the Most Valuable Player award for the tournament and earned the save in the title game.
