In August of 2009, Turner was selected to play the role of Sansa Stark, a young noblewoman, in the fantasy drama series Game of Thrones, which airs on HBO. Production on the movie started in July of 2010, when Turner was only 14 years old. Turner’s debut on the small screen came in the form of Sansa. Turner’s theatre teacher urged her to audition for the part, and she colored her blonde hair reddish for the role.
However, beginning in Season 7 she began wearing wigs instead of her natural hair. Her performance as Sansa, which she gave alongside that of her on-screen sister, Maisie Williams, earned her a nomination for the Young Artist Award for Best Performance in a TV Series – Supporting Young Actress in 2012. She ultimately did not win the award. Turner was a part of each and every one of the eight aired seasons.
It was in the 2013 independent thriller film Another Me, which was based on Catherine MacPhail’s novel of the same name, that she made her debut in the film industry. Her character was the main protagonist. In the television movie The Thirteenth Tale, which aired in 2013, she played the role of Adeline March. The movie was finally released on May 29, 2015, although only in select theaters and via video on demand.
Additionally, Turner narrated the audiobook adaptation of the short tale “The Girl in the Mirror” written by Lev Grossman. This story was published in the collection of short fiction titled Dangerous Women, which was edited by George R. R. Martin. During the same year, she was chosen to represent Karen Millen in their “The Journey” advertising campaign. In the 2016 film X-Men: Apocalypse, in which Turner portrayed the mutant Jean Grey, the film received a mixed reception from critics when it was released in May.

In August of 2017, Turner stated that she believed her social media following was more responsible for her successful casting in an unnamed project than her abilities as an actress, stating, “It was between me and another girl who is a far better actress than I am, far better, but I had the followers, so I got the job.” Turner was referring to herself as being “a far better actress than I am.” She began working with Wella Hair in June of 2017, and in the process, she became the company’s first ever international brand ambassador.
