Sufjan Stevens – Sufjan Stevens is an American singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. He was born on July 1, 1975 in the United States. He has recorded 10 studio albums under his own name as well as many albums in collaboration with other musicians. Stevens has been nominated for both the Grammy Award and the Academy Award.

His first studio album, titled A Sun Came, was issued in 2000 on the record company known as Asthmatic Kitty, which he and his stepfather had co-founded. Both the album Illinois, which he released in 2005, and the single “Chicago” from that album helped him achieve widespread fame.

His album Illinois debuted at number one on the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart. In later years, Stevens made contributions to the score for the film “Call Me by Your Name,” which was released in 2017.

Sufjan Stevens Career

  • Stevens got his start in the music industry as a member of the folk-rock band Marzuki, which was based in Holland, Michigan. He also played in the garage band Con Los Dudes. In addition to that, he has played (and still plays) a variety of instruments for the Danielson Family.
  • A Sun Came was Stevens’ first solo album, which he wrote, recorded, and published on Asthmatic Kitty Records during his senior year at Hope College. The album was titled “A Sun Came.”
  • Stevens wrote and recorded the music for his second album, Enjoy Your Rabbit, while he was living in New York. The album is a song cycle that explores electronica and is centered around the animals that are associated with the Chinese zodiac.
  • Stevens made the announcement in April of 2006 that 21 pieces of music that he had selected from the recording sessions that took place in Illinois would be merged into a new album that would be titled The Avalanche and would be released on July 11, 2006.
  • The piece titled “Majesty Snowbird” was first performed by Stevens on September 11, 2006 in Nashville, Tennessee. It was more over ten minutes long.                                                                     
  • During the fall tour that Stevens did in 2009, he debuted four new songs: “All Delighted People,” “Impossible Soul,” “Too Much,” and “Age of Adz.” He began performing these songs in September 2009.
  • In 2010, Stevens was included on The National’s album High Violet, which was released in May of that year. In addition, Stevens sang backing vocals for the band while they performed on The Late Show with David Letterman.
  • On April 18, 2023, Stevens made the announcement that he would be releasing the album Reflections. The album includes duo-piano compositions that Stevens had created for Houston Ballet.
  • In addition to revealing Reflections, Stevens also unveiled the album’s first track, “Ekstasis,” which is a composition performed by Timo Andres and Conor Hanick, both of whom are pianists. On May 19, 2023, Reflections was made available for purchase via Asthmatic Kitty Records.
  • Along with the release of the song “So You Are Tired” on August 14, 2023, Stevens also made an announcement regarding the release of an album titled Javelin in the month of October 2023.
