Tamara Lawrance – Tamara Naomi Lawrance (born 1994) is a well-known actress in Britain. Her performances as Prince Harry’s republican girlfriend in the 2017 BBC television film King Charles III and as Viola in the 2017 production of Twelfth Night at the National Theatre, both of which were cinecast internationally on NT Live, have brought her a lot of attention and made her a well-known actress. As a result of her work as Viola in 2018, she was awarded the runner-up prize at the Ian Charleson Awards.

Both WhatsOnStage and The Guardian included her on their lists of “20 talents set to take 2017 by storm” after naming her one of “10 theatre faces to look out for in 2017”.

She played the role of Miss July, a former slave who worked on a sugar plantation in Jamaica during the 19th century, in the three-part BBC adaptation of Andrea Levy’s novel The Long Song, which aired in December of 2018.

Tamara Lawrance Career

  • In the 2016 BBC miniseries Undercover, starring Adrian Lester and Sophie Okonedo, Lawrance made her acting debut in the role of Clem, the eldest daughter of the characters Adrian Lester and Sophie Okonedo played.
  • She then appeared on stage at the National Theatre as Ma Rainey’s girlfriend Dussie Mae in the 2016 revival of August Wilson’s play Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. Her “electrifying presence and vocal nuance” was praised by The New Statesman, and “eye-catching” was how The Guardian described her.
  • After that, she appeared in the new play Unreachable (2016) by Anthony Neilson at the Royal Court Theatre, where she shared the stage with Matt Smith. The piece is about an obsessive film director. 
  • The experimental piece was met with reviews that were slightly divided, but Lawrance got universal acclaim, being called “extraordinary” (WhatsOnStage), “superb” (The Stage), and possessing “astonishing candor and directness” (The Guardian).
  • In 2017, she played the role of Viola in Twelfth Night at the National Theatre, and a performance of the piece was broadcast live all over the world on NT Live. Her performance has been described as “compelling” and “passionate,” and Time Out magazine has referred to her as “charismatic and loveable.” As a result of her performance, she was awarded the runner-up prize at the Ian Charleson Awards.
