Troy Deeney Career

  • At the age of 15, Deeney was invited by the Aston Villa academy to take part in a four-day summer trial with the intention of winning a youth contract. However, he did not attend the first three days of the trial because he “knew there was a game on the last day,” and Villa did not give him any terms.
  • As soon as he graduated from high school in 2004, he started his apprenticeship as a bricklayer, earning a weekly wage of 120 pounds, and he joined Chelmsley Town. On October 9, 2004, he made his debut in a match against Mile Oak Rovers, which ended in a 2–1 victory.
  • He was only able to make his debut when numerous players were unable to participate due to the fact that the game was an early kick-off. This was done in order to avoid a conflict with England’s World Cup Qualifier match against Wales in 2006.
  • Mick Halsall, the Head of Youth for Walsall, was the one who discovered Deeney. He was only able to make it to the event because his son was also competing in it, and because the match that he was supposed to attend had been postponed.
  • While Deeney was playing while under the influence of alcohol, he managed to score seven goals in a victory that was 11–4 in favor of the team.
  • Deeney submitted a written transfer request on August 4, 2010, the same day that numerous Championship clubs expressed interest in acquiring his services.
  • It had been announced to him earlier in the summer that he would be leaving Walsall, and he had slackened his pre-season training as a form of protest against the club’s strong position when they were attempting to sell him.
  • A few of days later, he signed a contract with Watford, which increased his weekly pay from £1,200 to £6,000. The initial sum for the contract was £250,000, and it could go up to £500,000 over the course of two years.
  • In the match that took place at Vicarage Road on September 22, 2012, Deeney made his debut for Watford following his release from prison. The match included a match versus Bristol City.
  • Deeney, who entered the game in the second half and hit the post, contributed to the match’s final score of 2–2. On the 29th of September, he started the next match, which was against Huddersfield Town, and he scored the game-winning goal from a penalty kick in the away victory, which was 3–2.
  • In the second leg of the play-off semi-final, which took place at Vicarage Road on May 12, 2013, Watford played off against Leicester City.
  • A goal scored by Deeney deep into injury time allowed his team to go to the Championship Play-off final at Wembley Stadium. This was one of the most dramatic endings to a play-off match in the history of the competition.
  • A new contract with Watford for a period of five years was signed by Deeney on July 1, 2016. On September 10, 2016, he scored his first goal of the 2016–17 season at the London Stadium, which is West Ham United’s new home site. He equalized the score in a comeback victory that ended with a score of 4–2.
  • After spending eleven years with Watford, Deeney departed the club as a free agent on August 30, 2021. During his time with the club, he had played 419 games and scored 140 goals.
  • On August 17, 2023, Deeney became a player-coach for the London team Forest Green Rovers, which competed in League Two.
  • Deeney was named as the permanent head coach of the club on December 20, 2023, following the departure of manager David Horseman, who had left the club by mutual consent. At the time, the squad was ranked 23rd in League Two, five points away from safety.
