Wiz Khalifa Career

  • Benjy Grinberg, president of Rostrum Records, first became aware of Wiz Khalifa in 2004, when the rapper’s contribution to a mixtape featuring a variety of emerging Pittsburgh musicians piqued his interest. Grinberg was listening to the mixtape.
  • When Grinberg finally met the 16-year-old artist, he made the decision right away that he wanted to collaborate with him. Later, he told HitQuarters: “Even though he wasn’t all the way developed you could just tell that he was a diamond in the rough, and that with some polishing, guidance, and backing he could become something special.”
  • Grinberg is currently working with the artist. Soon after that, Khalifa secured a recording contract with the label and began an artist development process that lasted for seven years.
  • In 2007, Khalifa secured a recording contract with Warner Bros. Records and issued two mixtapes via Rostrum Records: the first was titled Grow Season and was hosted by DJ Green Lantern; it was published on July 4, 2007, and the second was titled Prince of the City 2 and was issued on November 20, 2007.
  • “Say Yeah,” his first single released by Warner Bros., peaked at number 25 on the Billboard Rhythmic Top 40 music chart and at number 20 on the Billboard Hot Rap Tracks list.
  • Khalifa has released his debut single for Rostrum/Atlantic, titled “Black and Yellow.” The single was created by Stargate and has garnered playing on radio stations.
  • Rolling Papers was Khalifa’s debut studio album, and it was released in the United States on March 29, 2011. With first-week sales of 197,000 copies in the United States, the album debuted at position number two on the Billboard 200 chart in the United States.
  • Khalifa made the announcement that he would be releasing his second studio album on April 11, 2012. The album will be named Only Nigga In First Class, but it will be shortened to O.N.I.F.C. for distribution to mainstream markets.
  • “We Dem Boyz” was the first single that Khalifa released under the moniker Blacc Hollywood on February 11, 2014. Talk About It in the Morning is a collaborative extended play that was released on March 31, 2015 by Wiz Khalifa and fellow Taylor Gang musician Ty Dolla $ign.
  • In 2016, Khalifa filed a lawsuit against his former manager Benjy Grinberg and Rostrum Records over a “360 deal” that he said was an unfair contract and that he had signed.
  • In addition to monetary compensation in the amount of one million dollars, punitive penalties, and attorney fees are also being sought by Khalifa. After a decade of working together, he and Grinberg decided to separate ways.
  • In 2018, he caused controversy by writing lyrics for his song “Hot Now” that were racially insensitive and insulting toward Koreans.
  • Khalifa announced the release of his newest extended play (EP), titled The Saga of Wiz Khalifa, on April 20, 2020. On the album, there were tracks that featured collaborations with Tyga, Logic, Mustard, and Ty Dolla $ign.
  • Khalifa made an appearance alongside Travis Barker on a brand new song titled “Drums Drums Drums” in May of 2020. Khalifa participated as “Chameleon” in the fifth season of The Masked Singer in 2021. He completed the race in third position.
