Neill has had prominent roles in a variety of films during the course of his 53-year career, including both dramatic and action-packed films. The term “international leading man” has been used to describe him, and he is widely considered as one of the most versatile actors of his generation.

Neill was born in Omagh, which is located in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. In 1954, he relocated to Christchurch with his family. He first came to the public’s attention with his performance in the film Sleeping Dogs, which was released in 1977. Subsequently, he went on to star in the films My Brilliant Career (1979) and Dead Calm (1989).

  • The City of No (1971), a New Zealand television film, was Neill’s first feature and was released in 1971. After that, he directed a short film titled “The Water Cycle” in 1972 and a television feature titled “Hunt’s Duffer” in 1973.
  • Neill is credited with writing and directing the film Telephone Etiquette (1974), which was produced by the New Zealand National Film Unit. In addition, he was in the movie Landfall.
  • Neill traveled to Australia in order to appear as a special guest on the television show The Sullivans. In the film My Brilliant Career, which starred Judy Davis and was a huge hit all over the world, he played the role of the romantic leading guy.
