Bobby Petrino Assistant Coaching Career

  • After spending a year at Carroll, he moved on to Weber State College, which is a member of the Big Sky Conference. There, he worked as a graduate assistant coach for quarterbacks under the direction of Mike Price, the head coach. In 1985, Petrino went back to his old mater to take over the offensive coordinator position.
  • In 1989, Petrino was elevated to the position of offensive coordinator at the University of Idaho, where he had previously served as the quarterbacks coach for one year under the direction of John L. Smith, who had recently taken over as head coach.
  • When he was hired as the quarterbacks coach at Arizona State University, which was a member of the Pac-10 Conference, he went up to Division I-A, which is now known as FBS.
  • During his first season in the National Football League (NFL), Petrino was employed by the Jacksonville Jaguars from 1999 to 2001. During that time, he served as the quarterbacks coach for two seasons and as the offensive coordinator for the third season.
  • Petrino made his comeback to the college levels in 2002, taking over for Noel Mazzone as the offensive coordinator at Auburn, where he was working under the direction of Tommy Tuberville. Petrino was responsible for a substantial improvement in the offense during that season.

Head Coaching Career

  • It was in 2003 when Petrino took over as head coach of the Louisville Cardinals, succeeding John L. Smith, who had left for Michigan State during that time. In the midst of the Tigers’ deliberations on whether or not to keep his former boss, Tuberville, as head coach, Petrino conducted a covert interview for the coaching position at Auburn after only one season at Louisville.
  • Petrino was able to transform the Cardinals into a national powerhouse during his four years at Louisville. It was just the second and third time that the Cardinals won as many as 11 games in a season, and to this day, they have only ever appeared in the final top 10 of a major media poll.
  • He guided them to 11 victories in 2004 and 12 wins in 2006, becoming the only team in the history of the Cardinals to achieve this feat.
  • On July 13, 2006, Petrino signed a contract to continue his position as head football coach, which was worth $25.6 million over ten years.
  • As a result of the agreement, Petrino received an increase in his annual salary from $1 million to $1.6 million, and he would have been paid $2.6 million in the last year of the agreement. The agreement contained a buyout clause that was worth one million dollars.
  • On January 7, 2007, it was revealed that Petrino had accepted the role of head coach for the Atlanta Falcons of the National Football League. This accomplishment came less than six months after Petrino signed the 10-year contract described above.
  • As soon as Petrino resigned from his position with the Falcons, he and Long began negotiations on a deal that stipulated Petrino would be paid $2.85 million annually for a period of five years. The contract was later extended to seven years before Petrino actually signed it.
  • Within a short distance of the city of Crosses, Petrino was engaged in a motorbike accident that occurred on Arkansas Highway 16 in April of 2012. During the ride, he was accompanied by Jessica Dorrell, a former Arkansas All-SEC volleyball player.
  • On March 28, he had hired Dorrell to work as the student-athlete development coordinator for the football team. Prior to that, she had been a fundraiser for the Razorback Foundation.
  • As a result of receiving unanimous approval from the University of Louisville Athletic Association, Petrino made his official return to Louisville on January 9, 2014, during a press conference.
  • It has been claimed that Petrino signed a contract that included a buyout of $10 million and a payment of $24.5 million over a period of seven years.
  • Petrino was hired to take over for Dave Steckel as the head football coach at Missouri State University, which is a member of the Missouri Valley Football Conference (MVFC) in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (FCS). The announcement was made on January 15, 2020.
  • In the year 2022, which was Petrino’s last season at Missouri State, the squad had a decline, resulting in a record of 5-6, which included a losing streak of five games.
  • Petrino’s former club, Arkansas, was the opponent that Missouri State faced in Fayetteville. Although Missouri State came close to pulling off an upset, Arkansas, which is rated tenth, prevailed 38–27.
