Michael Burry Career
- After finishing medical school, Burry worked first as a resident in neurology at Stanford Hospital, and subsequently as a resident in pathology at Stanford Hospital.
- After that, he went out to launch his own hedge fund. He had already garnered a name as an investor by displaying success in value investing, which he discussed on message boards on the stock discussion website Silicon Investor beginning in 1996.
- This contributed to the development of his profile as an investor. He was so successful with his stock recommendations that he caught the attention of corporations like Vanguard and White Mountains Insurance Group, as well as notable investors like Joel Greenblatt. Burry adheres to more conventional conceptions of what constitutes worth.
- He has stated on multiple occasions that his method of investing is founded on Benjamin Graham and David Dodd’s book Security Analysis, which was published in 1934. He has said things such as, “All of my stock picking is 100% based on the concept of a margin of safety.”                 Â
- Following the closure of his website in November of the year 2000, Burry established the hedge fund Scion Capital using money inherited from his family as well as money borrowed from them. He chose to honor one of his favorite books, Terry Brooks’ The Scions of Shannara (1990), by giving it that name.
- In 2005, Burry made the decision to concentrate their efforts on the subprime sector. Through his examination of mortgage lending methods in 2003 and 2004, he correctly anticipated that the real estate bubble will burst as early as 2007, despite the fact that these practices were still in place at the time.
- Burry contended in an opinion piece that was published in The New York Times on April 3, 2010, that anyone who had closely examined the financial markets in 2003, 2004, and 2005 might have identified the mounting risk in the subprime markets.
- The piece was published in the newspaper.2013 was the year when Burry restarted his hedge fund, which he now referred to as Scion Asset Management. He did so in order to begin submitting reports as an exempt reporting adviser (ERA) that was authorized by the SEC and was active in the state of California.
- It was widely reported in August 2023 that Burry’s hedge fund, Scion Asset Management, had placed a wager of $1.6 billion on a meltdown in the stock market in the United States. According to the filings that Burry made with the securities regulators, at the end of the second quarter of 2023, he had put options on both the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq-100.
- Although it has been widely reported that the put options constitute 93% of Scion’s entire portfolio, this is inaccurate because the $1.6 billion number is based on the greatest conceivable value that the put options may grow to, and not the amount that they were actually purchased for. Put options can climb in value to a maximum of $1.6 billion.
