Wembanyama was born on January 4, 2004, in France. In the 2023 NBA draft, the San Antonio Spurs selected him with the first overall pick because they believed he was one of the greatest basketball prospects of his generation. Wembanyama is currently tied with Boban Marjanovic for the title of tallest active NBA player.

2019 was the beginning of Wembanyama’s professional career, which he began with Nanterre 92 in the LNB Pro A. After another year had passed, he made the switch to ASVEL, where he ended up winning the Pro A title in his solitary season with the team.

Wembanyama entered the world on January 4, 2004, in the city of Le Chesnay, France. His father, Félix, hails from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and is a former track and field athlete who competed in the high jump, long jump, and triple jump. His mother, Elodie de Fautereau, is a former player as well as a coach in the sport of basketball.

His younger brother, Oscar, has played basketball and handball at the juvenile level, and his older sister, Eve, is a professional basketball player.

• Wembanyama got his first taste of the professional game during the 2019–20 season, when he played for the senior side of Nanterre 92. He did so under the direction of head coach Pascal Donnadieu, and he saw limited action in two matches.

• He played for both the under-21 team and the under-18 team, but his primary competition was in LNB Espoirs, the French under-21 division. On October 29, 2019, Wembanyama made his debut in the professional game against Brescia in the EuroCup.

• He played for a total of 31 seconds. After Stefan Petkovi, he was the second-youngest player to ever compete in the EuroCup. He was 15 years, nine months, and 25 days old when he made his debut.   

• Wembanyama signed a contract to play for both Centre Fédéral in the Nationale Masculine 1 (NM1) and Nanterre’s senior and under-21 teams during the 2020–2021 season. He also played for both Nanterre teams during the same season.

• On September 23, 2020, he made his first appearance in LNB Pro A, which was a game against JL Bourg. He played for four minutes and grabbed one rebound.

• Wembanyama committed to ASVEL of the Pro A and the EuroLeague by signing a contract on June 29, 2021. The deal was for three years. Due to an illness, he missed the first month of the season and was unable to participate in any games during that time.

• On July 4, 2022, Wembanyama signed a contract to play with Metropolitans 92 in the LNB Pro A. The deal was for two years. Because of Vincent Collet’s well-known track record of fostering the growth of younger players and opening up doors of opportunity for them, he decided to try out for the team.

• Wembanyama rose to prominence in the eyes of the American media in October 2022 after competing in two exhibition games against the NBA G League Ignite in Las Vegas. These games featured Scoot Henderson, who was anticipated to be selected second overall.

• Wembanyama was chosen by the San Antonio Spurs with the first choice in the 2023 NBA draft, which took place on June 22. This made him the player with the highest overall pick.

• As a result of his recruitment, he achieved a number of firsts, including becoming the first French player to be recruited with the first overall pick, the second European player to do so (after Andrea Bargnani in 2006), and the Spurs’ third first-overall pick ever, following David Robinson and Tim Duncan.

• In a victory over the Phoenix Suns on November 2, Wembanyama scored a career-high 38 points and added 10 rebounds, one steal, and two blocks in the game. The final score was 132–121.

• In addition to that, he became the third teenager in NBA history to record at least 35 points, 10 rebounds, and 2 blocks in a single game, joining LeBron James and Kevin Durant as the only two.
