Desmond Bane – Desmond Michael Bane is a professional basketball player originally from the United States who now plays for the Memphis Grizzlies of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Bane was born on June 25, 1998.

During his time at TCU, he was a member of the Horned Frogs basketball team. In the first year of his career with Memphis, Bane was taken with the 30th overall choice in the first round of the 2020 NBA draft. He was also selected to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team during his first season with Memphis.

Moving about was something that Bane, his mother Marissa, and his sister did rather frequently after he was born. Beginning when he was two years old, he began living with his great-grandparents, who were responsible for his upbringing during the remainder of his youth in Richmond, Indiana.

Desmond Bane College Career

  • Following his performance against Bradley, in which he scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds, Bane was named the Newcomer of the Week for the Big 12 Conference.
  • He scored 16 points, including three free throws with two seconds left on the clock, which contributed to TCU’s victory over the number one-ranked Kansas Jayhawks in the quarterfinals of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship.
  • The final score was 85–08. To help TCU win the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) as a freshman, Bane contributed nine points in the championship game against Georgia Tech. Although he started 13 games, he finished with an average of 7.1 points and 2.9 rebounds per game.
  • A season-high 27 points were scored by Bane in the team’s victory over Iowa State, which was 89–83. On average, Bane scored 12.5 points and grabbed 4.1 rebounds per game during his sophomore season. Additionally, he led the Big 12 in three-point accuracy with 47.2%.
  • In the first round of the NCAA tournament, Bane provided the team with five points, four rebounds, four assists, a steal, and a block. The team ultimately fell to Syracuse.

Professional Career

  • Bane was chosen by the Boston Celtics with the thirty-first overall choice in the NBA draft that took place in 2020. After Kurt Thomas in 1995, he became the first player from TCU to be selected in the first round of the drafting process.
  • After that, Bane was dealt to the Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for a third-round choice in the future.There was an announcement made by the Grizzlies on November 25, 2020, stating that they had signed Bane.                                             
  • Bane was honored with a spot on the NBA All-Rookie Second Team during his first season in the league. His three-point field goal percentage in his rookie season was the greatest since Stephen Curry (minimum of 150 tries), and he beat the previous record.
  • In a victory over the Dallas Mavericks on December 5, 2021, Bane set a new career best with 29 points scored and nine rebounds grabbed. The game ended with a score of 97–90.
  • Bane and Tyrese Haliburton emerged victorious in the Clorox Clutch Challenge, which took place during the 2022 NBA All Star Weekend.
  • The Grizzlies franchise record for the most three-pointers made in a season was achieved by Bane on March 23, 2022, surpassing the previous record previously held by Mike Miller, which was set in 2007 (202).
  • On October 24, 2022, Bane scored 38 points, which was a career high at the time, in a victory over the Brooklyn Nets by a score of 134–124.On November 11, he sustained an injury to his right foot while playing against the Minnesota Timberwolves. The game ended with a score of 114–103.
  • Bane was diagnosed with a Grade 2 sprain of his right big toe, and the Grizzlies went on to say that he will be re-evaluated in two to three weeks. This news came three days after the initial announcement.
  • Bane scored a postseason career-high 36 points in game 4 of the Grizzlies’ first-round playoff series against the Los Angeles Lakers. The game ended in overtime, and the Grizzlies were defeated by the Lakers on 117–111.
  • It was two days later when Bane won game 5 of the playoffs with a score of 116–99, with 33 points, a playoff career-high 10 rebounds, and 5 assists. In six games, Memphis was defeated in the series.
  • Immediately following the conclusion of the 2022–23 season, Bane signed a new max extension deal with the Grizzlies, which was the most lucrative contract in the history of the Grizzlies club. The deal was for a period of five years and a total of $207 million.
  • In a victory over the Detroit Pistons by a score of 116-102 on December 6, 2023, Bane not only broke his career high with 49 points but also grabbed six rebounds and dished out eight assists.
