Emerald Fennell Acting Career
- Chickens was a sitcom that aired on Channel 4 and featured Fennell, along with Joe Thomas, Simon Bird, and Jonny Sweet. After that, she changed the color of her blonde hair to red and auditioned for the role of Patsy Mount in the period drama series Call the Midwife, which aired on BBC One.
- A number of period dramas, such as Albert Nobbs (2011), Anna Karenina, The Danish Girl (2015), and Vita & Virginia (2019), featured her in supporting roles.
- On October 23, 2018, Netflix made the announcement that Fennell would take on the role of Camilla Shand in the third season of their period drama series The Crown. She continued to play the part throughout the fourth season, which resulted in her being nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award in the category of Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.
- Fennell made a brief appearance in her directorial debut film Promising Young Woman as the host of a make-up tutorial video for a ‘blowjob lip.’ This appearance was not credited to Fennell.
Directing and Writing Career
- In 2008, Madeleine Lloyd Webber commissioned Fennell to write the screenplay for a film that she would go on to co-produce. It was a romantic comedy that went by the name Chukka, and it was about a group of students who want to prevent the closing of their school by competing against the wealthy children at polo.
- Bloomsbury Children’s Books released Fennell’s debut book, a children’s fantasy named Shiverton Hall, in January of 2013. The book was written for young adults. It was made available as an ebook by Bloomsbury USA in the month of December 2012.
- In the middle of 2014, a sequel that was given the title The Creeper was released. The Shiverton Hall series is the name given to them in the ISFDB database.                                   Â
- In 2014, it was one of the books that made the shortlist for the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize. After that, in September of 2015, she debuted as an author of horror for adults with the publication of her novel Monsters.
- Phoebe Waller-Bridge, a personal friend of Fennell’s, made the announcement in July 2018 that she had engaged Fennell to take over as head writer for the second season of the BBC spy thriller series Killing Eve. Waller-Bridge, however, will continue to serve in the role of producer for the show.
- Fennell became an executive producer on the show in addition to writing six episodes for the season that he was responsible for.
- It was revealed in January 2019 that Fennell would be producing, writing, and directing the comic thriller film Promising Young Woman, which would feature Carey Mulligan. March of 2019 marked the beginning of production. During the 23-day shoot, Fennell was seven months pregnant with her second child.
- In January of 2020, Andrew Lloyd Webber made the announcement that he would be working with Fennell on the musical Cinderella, which would later have its world premiere in August of 2021 in London.
- Critics were largely effusive in their praise for the performance that took place on the West End. Bad Cinderella was the name given to the production when it debuted on Broadway in 2023. Playwright Alexis Scheer was responsible for adapting Fennell’s original book for the stage.
- The updated book was panned by Naveen Kumar for the publication Variety, who wrote that “it’s an illogical head-scratcher, despite being based on a story most everyone knows”. The performance was the last one in June of 2023.
- It was reported in January 2022 that Fennell would be directing her next film for Media Rights Capital, which was scheduled to begin production in the summer of that same year.
