- Herbert got his first start in the National Football League on September 20, 2020, against the Kansas City Chiefs. Taylor was ruled inactive after the team doctor accidently pierced his lung, therefore Herbert was given the opportunity to play in Taylor’s place.
- In the end, he was responsible for 311 passing yards, one touchdown, one interception, and one running touchdown, but the Chargers were defeated 23–20 in overtime.
- The Chargers got out to a strong start, going 3–1, including a 30–24 win over the Kansas City Chiefs thanks in large part to Herbert’s leadership.
- Herbert had his greatest statistical game of the season in Week 5, when the Browns of Cleveland were the team they were playing. He completed passes for 398 yards and scored five touchdowns, including one on the ground, as his team won a shootout by a score of 47–42.
- The Chargers exercised their right to take up Herbert’s fifth-year option on his contract on April 28, 2023. On July 25, he signed a five-year agreement that is valued at $262.5 million and will keep him under contract through the 2029 season.
- The contract made Herbert the highest-paid player in NFL history at the time of the signing, exceeding the previous record established by Lamar Jackson just a few months previously.
- Additionally, Herbert became the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL based on average annual value, which was $52.5 million per season. However, just two months later, Joe Burrow would make history by signing a record-breaking extension to his contract.
- After a winless first two games of the season, Herbert led a fourth-quarter comeback against the Vikings in Week 3, which resulted in a 28–24 victory for his team. This game was also the first time in his career that he threw for more over 400 yards in an NFL game.
