Sean McDermott Career
When McDermott first joined the Philadelphia Eagles in 1999, he was hired on as the team’s scouting administrative coordinator. He remained in that role until 2001, when he was elevated to a position on Andy Reid’s coaching staff. He first worked as an assistant defensive backs coach and then went on to become the defensive quality control coach.
In 2003, he took over as defensive backs coach after Steve Spagnuolo, who had been moved to the position of linebackers coach at the time. In 2004, McDermott was able to send both of his starting safeties to the Pro Bowl for the first time in the history of the team. These safeties were Brian Dawkins and Michael Lewis.
This was the season where McDermott and the Eagles competed in Super Bowl XXXIX, but they were defeated by the New England Patriots, who went on to win their second consecutive Super Bowl title. As a result of McDermott’s coaching, Dawkins was selected for the Pro Bowl in both 2005 and 2006, bringing his total number of appearances to four.
McDermott was promoted to the position of linebackers coach in 2007, following Spagnuolo’s departure to accept the position of defensive coordinator for the New York Giants. McDermott was given the position of secondary coach once more by Andy Reid, the head coach of the Eagles, on January 28, 2008. On January 11, 2017, the Buffalo Bills announced that they have selected McDermott to serve as the team’s 19th head coach in the long history of the franchise.
McDermott won his first game as head coach of the Buffalo Bills on September 10, 2017, a victory over the New York Jets. With this victory, McDermott became just the third head coach in Bills history to win his first game with the franchise, following in the footsteps of Marv Levy and Rex Ryan.
During the 2022 campaign, the Bills were managed by McDermott, who guided them to a record of 13–3 and a first-place finish in the AFC East. Because to the incident involving Damar Hamlin in Week 17, which earned McDermott accolades for his role in helping to cancel, the Bills did not play a total of 17 games in 2022. The Buffalo Bills prevailed against the Miami Dolphins in the Wild Card Round with a score of 34–31.
The Buffalo Bills’ season came to an end in the Divisional Round after they were defeated by the Cincinnati Bengals by a score of 27–10. McDermott took up play-calling duties for the defense for the 2023 season after Leslie Frazier stepped down from those responsibilities in February of 2023. The Bills revealed on June 23, 2023 that they had extended McDermott’s contract until the 2027 season in their press release.
